Lydia Fay, daughter of Jonas and Lydia (Warner) Fay.
Children:
Elizabeth Fassett, daughter of Benjamin and Betty (Dewey) Fassett.
Uriah Edgerton was born at Bennington, Vermont on
October 12, 1780. He was the only son
of Eleazer and Sarah (Hyde) Edgerton.
Uriah was raised in Bennington and lived there his entire life. He was probably named after his uncle,
Uriah Edgerton (his father’s youngest brother), who also settled in
Bennington. Prior to the elder Uriah’s
death in 1816, Uriah was usually referred to in deeds and census records as
“Uriah Edgerton 2nd” or “Uriah Edgerton Jun.”, so as to distinguish him from
this uncle. Uriah was married on March 16, 1801 to Miss Lydia
Fay, daughter of Jonas and Lydia (Warner) Fay of Bennington. Lydia was born at Bennington on January 12,
1781. Uriah and Lydia resided in North
Bennington and raised a family of eight children: three sons, Norman, Fay and Daniel Warner;
and five daughters, Mellona, Caroline Althea, Ruth, Eliza and Sarah Althea. Uriah and Lydia Edgerton were members of the First
Congregational Church of Bennington.
“Lydia, wife of Uriah Edgerton” was admitted to the Church membership
in 1811; and Uriah was later admitted to the membership in 1831. Uriah and Lydia’s two younger daughters,
Eliza and Sarah, were baptized at the Church in 1819 and 1825
respectively. Three of the elder
daughters – Mellona, Caroline and Ruth – were later admitted to the Church. Uriah Edgerton was a prominent member of the
Bennington community and was generally referred to with the honorific
“Esquire”. His name was mentioned
frequently in the town records of Bennington and he served regularly on
committees. At a meeting held on July
17, 1830, he was chosen as a delegate to the convention at Wilmington to
nominate a Congressional candidate for the district. In 1834, he was a vice president of the
Democratic County Convention at Bennington, and was also appointed a delegate
to the County Convention in 1836. He
served for many years as a justice of the peace. The following biographical entry for Uriah Edgerton is excerpted from Memorials of a Century, Embracing a Record of Individuals and Events Chiefly in The Early History of Bennington Vermont (Jennings, Isaac; Boston, Mass.: Gould and Lincoln; 1869; pg. 297): “URIAH EDGERTON, ESQ., son of [Eleazer Edgerton], deceased April 28, 1868, aged eighty-seven years, having adorned old age, and made it attractive by his Christian conversation and his genial spirit, and having enjoyed the affectionate esteem of his numerous acquaintances and friends.
