Vine Edgar Edgerton, son of Stephen P. and Anne (Cox) Edgerton.
Diantha Shaw, daughter of James and Caroline (Curtis) Shaw.
Children:
Vine Edgar Edgerton was born in Milo, New York
circa 1836, the second son and third child of Stephen P. and Anne (Cox)
Edgerton. He was no doubt named after
his uncle, Vine Bailey Edgerton, one of his father’s elder brothers. Vine was raised mainly in Yates County and
Oneida County, New York. His father
died when Vine was about thirteen years old. At the time of the 1850 Federal
Census, Vine was residing with his paternal uncle, Vine B. Edgerton, in
Sullivan Township, Madison County, New York (pg. 42; dwelling #585; family
#651; enum. August 1, 1850), where he was enumerated as “Vine E. Edgerton,
aged 14, born in New York”. In 1855,
Vine was back residing with his mother and siblings in Dix, Shuyler County,
New York, where the family was recorded in the New York State Census of that
year. Circa 1857, Vine E. Edgerton removed from New York
State and settled in northeastern Kansas.
He was listed as a head of household in the 1859
Kansas Territorial Census of Wolf Creek, Doniphan County, Kansas (pg.
6). Vine’s name was listed on the
census roll as “V. E. Edgerton” and
the enumeration of his household included two adults. His “date of settlement” was given as April
1857. Vine’s younger brother, George
Edgerton, was also recorded in this census, residing adjacent to Vine in the
same township. Vine Bailey Edgerton was married at Wolf River
Township, Kansas on September 20, 1858 to Miss Diantha Shaw, daughter of
James and Caroline (Curtis) Shaw.
Diantha was born at Farmington, Michigan on January 8, 1841. Vine and Diantha had two daughters: Carrie Marion, born August 20, 1860
(married Reuben Valentine Hellener); and Helen Irene, born January 5, 1862
(married Albert Beachamp). Mrs. Diantha Edgerton was listed as an original
member of the Oakland Methodist Episcopal Church in Wayne Township, Doniphan
County, Kansas, which was formed in the spring of 1858 by Rev. T. Munhall. The household of “Edward Egarta” was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Wolf River Township, Doniphan County, Kansas (pg. 53; dwelling #1250; family #1122; enum. August 15, 1850). There were enumerated as follows:
At the time of this enumeration, Vine and Diantha
were residing adjacent to her parents, James and Caroline Shaw, who were
enumerated directly afterwards on the Doniphan County census roll. Vine Edgar Edgerton served as a private in the
13th Regiment of the Kansas Infantry (Company C), during the Civil War. He enlisted on August 28, 1862 as a
resident of Doniphan County, Kansas and was mustered into the 13th Regiment
upon its original organization on September 20, 1862. In November and December of 1862, the
company fought in battles at Camp Bowen and Prairie Grove (both in Arkansas),
after which they made a forced march to Springfield, Missouri in January of
1863. Vine E. Edgerton died of typhoid
fever at Springfield, Missouri on March 11, 1863 (see Report of the
Adjutant General of the State of Kansas; The Kansas State Printing
Company, Topeka, Kansas; 1896). [Note:
On some records of his service, Vine’s name was incorrectly written as “Vincent
E. Edgerton”. In others, his surname
was mispelled “Edgington”.] Vine’s widow, Diantha, was remarried on August 29,
1865 at Lyon County, Kansas to Daniel Evander Mahaffey , by whom she had at
least four more children – three sons, James Walter, John Roland, and Frank
Leonard; and one daughter, Maggie. The
entire family, including all six of Diantha’s children (by both husbands), as
well as Diantha’s parents, was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of
Atchison City, Atchison County, Kansas.
Also enumerated in the household was Diantha’s future son-in-law,
Reuben Hellener. Mrs. Diantha (Shaw) Edgerton Mahaffey applied for
a Civil War Widow’s Pension on August 20, 1910, citing her second husband’s
service in the Kansas Infantry (9th and 3rd Regiments). She was residing in the state of Kansas at
the time of the application (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application
#947683, Certificate #714317). At the
time of the 1925 Kansas State Census (March 1, 1925), Diantha was residing
with her widowed daughter, Carrie (Edgerton) Hellener in Atchison City. She died shortly afterwards – on April 9,
1925 – at Atchison and was buried beside her second husband at Oak Hill
Cemetery in Atchison. Original Source Documents: 1850 Federal
