Walter N. Edgerton was born at Sangerfield, New York on April 28, 1827, the eldest son of Ezekiel and Maria (Parker) Edgerton.  He was raised in Sangerfield and later Bridgeport (Sullivan Township), Madison County, New York, where his father settled along with two of his brothers after the death of their father, Stephen Edgerton.  Walter’s father, Ezekiel, died in 1846, at which time Walter succeeded to the family homestead in Sullivan Township.  He made his living as a farmer.

Walter N. Edgerton was married in 1854 (probably at Sullivan, New York) to Miss Laura C. Damon, daughter of Clark and Susan Damon of Sullivan, New York.  Walter and Laura had seven children – Charles E., Frank Leslie, Caroline M., Clayton W., Lewis Grant Allie E. and Bertha E. – all born in Sullivan, New York.

In 1896, Walter Edgerton removed to Minoa (Manlius Township), in neighboring Onondaga County, New York.  His brother, John, also resided in Manlius, as well as his two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Franklin H. Dewey) and Harriet (Mrs. Charles K. Peck).

 

Walter N. Edgerton died at Minoa, Onondaga County, New York on January 8, 1898.  A copy of his death certificate was filed with the New York State Department of Health (year 1898; certificate #940).  The following obituary was published in the The Evening Herald (Syracuse, New York) on Monday, January 10, 1898:

 

“Death of Walter Edgerton.

 

Minoa, Dec. 10. – Walter Edgerton, a well known resident of this place, died at his home here on Saturday morning.  Mr. Edgerton removed here from Bridgeport, Madison county, about two years ago.  He was born in Sangerfield on April 28th, 1827.  He removed with his parents to Lenox and afterwards to Bridgeport, later purchasing the farm upon which he lived until his removal here in 1896.  In 1854 he married Miss Laura Damon of Bridgeport, who survives him.  Besides a widow, he is survived by six children, Charles E. of Bergen,  Frank L. of Bridgeport, Clayton W. of Solvay, Lewis G. of Jordan, Mrs. Fred Balch of Utica and Miss Bertha Edgerton of this place; also two brothers, Charles of Detroit; and John of Owasso, Mich., and one sister, Mrs. Charles Peck of North Manlius.”

According to the above census record, Laura was the mother of seven children, six of whom were still living.

 

Mrs. Laura C. (Damon) Edgerton died at Minoa, Onondaga County, New York on July 17, 1904.  A copy of her death certificate was filed with the New York State Department of Health (year 1904; certificate #31630).  The following obituary was published in The Post-Standard (Syracuse, New York) on Monday, July 18, 1904:

 

“DIES AT SEVENTY-ONE.

 

Mrs. Laura Edgerton Passes Away at Minoa.

 

Mrs. Laura Edgerton, aged 71 years, died at 8:30 o’clock last night at Minoa of paralysis.  She leaves four sons, Clayton Edgerton of Solvay, Louis Edgerton of East Syracuse, Charles Edgerton of Burgen and Frank Edgerton of Bridgeport; also two daughters, Mrs. Fred Baulch of Utica, and Miss Bertha Edgerton of Minoa.  The funeral arrangements have not been made.”
