Zebina Edgerton was born at Torringford, Connecticut on July 25, 1792, the eldest son of Isaac and Sarah Edgerton.  Zebina’s gravestones lists a birthdate of July 25, 1791, but the year is likely in error, since Zebina had an elder sister, Harriet, born in May of 1791.  Census records (cited below) also tally better with a birth in 1792.  The spelling of Zebina’s first name varies from source to source; eg. Zebina, Zebena, Sebrina and Zebrina.  The first of these seems to be the most common and is the spelling found on his tombstone in Palatine, Illinois.

Zebina was raised in Torringford, Connecticut and later Florence, Oneida County, New York, where his parents settled shortly after the turn of the century.   Upon his maturity, Zebina settled in Niagara County, New York, where he was a canal boat captain on the Erie Canal.  His first wife was Susan Pardee (daughter of John Pardee), by whom he had one daughter:  Charity Eliza, born circa 1823.  Susan died shortly after the birth of her daughter.  At the time of the 1830 Federal Census, Zebina was recorded living alone in Niagara, Niagara County, New York.  He was living adjacent to his father-in-law, John Pardee, and a brother-in-law, Alvah Pardee.  Zebina’s daughter, Eliza, was reportedly living with her grandfather, Isaac, in Florence, New York at this time.

In the early 1830’s, Zebina left New York State and removed to Cook County, Illinois where he settled in the village of Barrington.  He apparently left his daughter, Charity Eliza, behind in New York in the care of his parents, Isaac and Sarah, who later followed him to Illinois.  The Pardee Genealogy (Donald Lines Jacobus; New Haven, Conn: New Haven Colonial Society; 1927; pg. 191) provides the following explanatory excerpt:

“John Pardee of Niagara County, NY...left a will, dated 11 July 1835, and his son Alvah Pardee petitioned for its probation, stating that besides himself the deceased left two children, Hannah A. wife of Robert Cheesbrough of Niagara and Cornelia Ann wife of Zephaniah Warren of Southfield, Mich.; also a grandchild, Charity E. Edgerton, aged about 12, daughter of Susan Edgerton deceased, who was daughter of John Pardee and wife of Sebrina Edgerton who removed to Illinois leaving Charity with her Edgerton grandparent at Camden, Oneida Co., N. Y.”

In the year 1848, Zebina Edgerton purchased land in Cook County, Illinois from the Federal Government.  According to the land patent registered with the Bureau of Land Management (certificate # 25830), the property consisted of forty acres in “the North West quarter of the South East quarter of Section onr, in Township forty two, of Range nine”.  The patent was dated June 1, 1848.

“Zebrina Edgetout” was listed as a head of household in the 1850 Federal Census of Barrington, Cook County, Illinois (pg. 106; dwelling #673, family #682; enum. September 17, 1850).  He was residing adjacent to his son-in-law, George Nelson Cady, whose household was recorded  just previously on the census roll (dwelling #672, family #681).  The two households were enumerated as follows:

Sometime after 1853, Zebina was remarried to Mrs. Martha (Lord) Hunnewell, the widow of Samuel Hunnewell.  Martha was born July 23, 1805, in Massachusetts.  Her parentage has not yet been investigated.  Martha’s daughter, Lydia Maria Hunnewell, was later married to Zebina’s nephew, Bela T. Edgerton (son of his younger brother, Lorin).

The household of “Z. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Barrington, Cook County, Illinois (pg. 364; dwelling #2562; family #2572; enum. July 7, 1860), as follows:

At the time of this enumeration, Zebina was living nearby his nephew, Isaac Brainard Edgerton, whose household was enumerated previously on the same page of the census roll.

The following excerpts are from a letter written in January 1940 by Charles Lorin Edgerton I (a grandson of Zebina’s younger brother, Lorin):

“Zebina [Edgerton], 1791 [sic] – 1883.  One daughter Eliza, who married Nelson Cady…Zebina Edgerton was captain of a canal boat on the Erie Canal, when it was first built, but came to Illinois thirty or fourty years before he died.  His first wife Susan E. Pardee died when her only child was a baby.  Zebina then married a widow, Martha Hunnewell in Ill. and lived about 1/3 mile from us…Zebina was in the battle of Sacketts Harbor during the war of 1812.”

Zebina Edgerton died at Palatine, Illinois on April 2, 1883.  He was buried at the Cady Cemetery, in Palatine, nearby where his parents, Isaac and Sarah, had previously been interred.  His gravestone there was inscribed with the complete dates of his birth and death.  Zebina’s second wife, Martha (Lord) Edgerton, died just two days later and was also buried at Cady Cemetery.
