The first documented Edgerton in America was Richard Edgerton, who emigrated from England to Connecticut in the mid-1600’s. He settled first in Saybrook
and was later one of the original proprietors of Norwich.
Most of Richard’s children and grandchildren lived in Norwich. Richard was the progenitor of most, if not
all, of the Edgerton families that resided in Connecticut throughout the 1700’s and
1800’s. It was largely during the
fourth and fifth generations that the family began to spread out – first into
the surrounding states of Vermont, New York and Massachusetts,
and thence to points farther north, south and west. Today, the descendants of Richard Edgerton
number in the thousands and are found throughout the United States and abroad.
