Their children McNary Harris, James, Mary J. and Samuel were listed as living with them.² Jane McFerren died on 19 November 1870 at Parker County, Texas, at age 78.^3,1 She was buried at Springtown Cemetery, Springtown, Parker County, Texas.³ (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

     McNary Harris Gilliland was born on 16 February 1828 at Tennessee.^2,1 He was the son of John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹ McNary Harris Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, in the household of his parents, John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹ McNary Harris Gilliland married Mary Isabella Doak circa 1852 at Arkansas.^3,2 McNary Harris Gilliland and Mary Isabella Doak appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Pond Creek township, Greene County, Missouri, enumerated 18 June 1900. Their daughter Mary Catherine was listed as living with them.³ McNary Harris Gilliland died on 9 July 1913 at Pond Creek township, Greene County, Missouri, at age 85.² He was buried at Rock Prairie Cemetery, Halltown, Lawrence County, Missouri.⁴ (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

     James Gilliland was born on 5 March 1831 at Haywood County, Tennessee.^1,2 He was the son of John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹ James Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, in the household of his parents, John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹

James Gilliland married Susan Keeling in 1854.³ James Gilliland and Susan Keeling appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bowen township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 15 August 1870. Their children D. Benson, John, Thomas and Margaret Catherine were listed as living with them.³ James Gilliland and Susan Keeling appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 5 June 1880. Their daughter Margaret Catherine was listed as living with them.⁴

The following biographical sketch of James appeared in the book History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas:

"James Gilliland, senior member of the firm of GILLILAND & STOTTS, dealers in hardware and agricultural implements, was born in Haywood County, Tenn., in 1831, on March 5, and is a son of J. B. and Jane (McFERREN) Gilliland.

The father was born in Virginia in 1791, moved to Alabama when a boy, and was married in Tennessee, where his eight children were born. In 1837 he located in Arkansas, five miles south of Huntsville, sold his place about 1850, and moved on King’s River, where he farmed until his death in 1857. The mother was born in Virginia in 1792, and died in Texas in 1867. All of the children, save one sister, are living.

James passed his youth upon the farm, remaining with parents until twenty-three years of age, when he married and engaged in farming. In 1857 he moved to Texas, and there served in the Confederate army four years. He left Texas in 1867 and settled in War Eagle, where he served as sheriff for two years after 1874. He then became interested in the insurance business, but for the past nine years has been successfully engaged in the mercantile business at Huntsville.

In 1854 he married Susan KEELING, of this county, by whom he has had five children: David B., John T., Samuel, Margaret C. and Mary Jane (deceased). Both himself and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Mr. Gilliland is a Democrat and a Mason."²

     Mary J. Gilliland was born circa 1833 at Tennessee.¹ She was the daughter of John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹ Mary J. Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, in the household of her parents, John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹

     Samuel Gilliland was born circa 1836 at Tennessee.¹ He was the son of John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹ Samuel Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, in the household of his parents, John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹ Samuel Gilliland married Catherine Keeling on 4 July 1858.² Samuel Gilliland and Catherine Keeling appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bowen township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 15 August 1870. Their children Mary, Arminda, Samuel B. and Amanda were listed as living with them.³ Samuel Gilliland and Catherine Keeling appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 5 June 1880. Their children Mindie J., Samuel B., Nancy C., Thomas and James M. were listed as living with them.⁴ Also living with them were Catherine's parents Thomas and Mary Keeling. Samuel Gilliland and Catherine Keeling appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 4 June 1900. Their son James M. was listed as living with them.⁵ On September 21, 1911, a short article appeared in the Fort Gibson New Era newspaper stating that Samuel was a Methodist preacher, had recently moved to Fort Gibson, Oklahoma from Arkansas, and was living with his daughter Mrs. J. P. Hamilton. According to the 1910 Muskogee County, Oklahoma census, James P. Hamilton's wife was named Mary and she was born circa 1860 in Texas which fits with Samuel and Catherine's oldest daughter.⁶ Samuel Gilliland died on 29 December 1915 at Fort Gibson, Muskogee County, Oklahoma.^7,2 His obituary stated that he was survived by two sons and three daughters. He was buried on 30 December 1915 at South Bethel Cemetery, Braggs, Muskogee County, Oklahoma.⁷

     Benson Green Gilliland was born on 10 June 1825 at Tennessee.^1,2 He was the son of John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren.¹ Benson Green Gilliland married Nancy Keeling in 1846 at Madison County, Arkansas.² Benson Green Gilliland and Nancy Keeling appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 18 November 1850. Their children William Perry, Thomas Berry and Weldon McNairy were listed as living with them, as was 11 year old Nancy Keeling.³ Benson Green Gilliland and Nancy Keeling appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Parker County, Texas, enumerated 25 August 1860. Their children William Perry, Thomas Berry, Weldon McNairy, John Preston, Franklin Bailey, James Boyd, Abner Benson "Doc" and Joseph Green were listed as living with them.⁴ Benson Green Gilliland and Nancy Keeling appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 1 August 1870. Their children Weldon McNairy, John Preston, Franklin Bailey, James Boyd, Abner Benson "Doc", Joseph Green, Lucretia Jane, Samuel Fletcher, Martha Mahalley and Abraham Pierce were listed as living with them.⁵ Benson Green Gilliland and Nancy Keeling appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Parker County, Texas, enumerated 25 June 1880. Their children Abner Benson "Doc", Lucretia Jane, Samuel Fletcher, Martha Mahalley, Abraham Pierce and Mary Ellen were listed as living with them.⁶ Benson Green Gilliland died on 1 July 1906 at Parker County, Texas, at age 81.⁷ He was buried at Springtown Cemetery, Springtown, Parker County, Texas.⁷ (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

     Samuel B. Gilliland was born on 12 December 1804 at Virginia.^2,3,4 He was the son of John Gilliland and Sarah Berry.¹ Samuel B. Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Tipton County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male 20-29, two males 30-39, and two females 15-19.⁵ He married Eliza McFerrin, daughter of James McFerrin and Jane Campbell Berry, in 1837.⁶ Samuel B. Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Tipton County, Tennessee, with a household listed as two males 10-14, one male 30-39, one female under 5, two females 5-9, and one female 20-29.⁷ He and Eliza McFerrin appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby County, Tennessee, enumerated 30 November 1850. Their children Ann, Sarah, James McFerrin, John and Kit were listed as living with them.⁴ On 15 December 1856, Samuel B. Gilliland of Shelby County, Tennessee, made out his Last Will & Testament.⁸ He died on 21 December 1856 at Shelby County, Tennessee, at age 52.^2,6,8

     Eliza McFerrin was born circa 1813 at Tennessee.² She was the daughter of James McFerrin and Jane Campbell Berry.³ Eliza McFerrin married Samuel B. Gilliland, son of John Gilliland and Sarah Berry, in 1837.¹ Eliza McFerrin was probably the female age 20 to 29 listed in the household of her husband, Samuel B. Gilliland, in the 1840 Federal Census of Tipton County, Tennessee.⁴ Eliza McFerrin and Samuel B. Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby County, Tennessee, enumerated 30 November 1850. Their children Ann, Sarah, James McFerrin, John and Kit were listed as living with them.²

     James McFerrin was born on 25 March 1784 at Washington County, Virginia.¹ He married Jane Campbell Berry on 25 March 1804.¹ James McFerrin died on 4 September 1840 at Tipton County, Tennessee, at age 56.¹

     Ann Gilliland was born circa 1840 at Tennessee.¹ She was probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, Samuel B. Gilliland, in the 1840 Federal Census of Tipton County, Tennessee.² Ann Gilliland was the daughter of Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹ Ann Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby County, Tennessee, in the household of her parents, Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹

     Sarah Gilliland was born circa 1843 at Tennessee.¹ She was the daughter of Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹ Sarah Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby County, Tennessee, in the household of her parents, Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹

     James McFerrin Gilliland was born on 14 December 1844 at Tipton County, Tennessee.^2,1 He was the son of Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹ James McFerrin Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby County, Tennessee, in the household of his parents, Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹ James McFerrin Gilliland married Annie Davis in 1873.² James McFerrin Gilliland died on 24 December 1895 at Nettleton, Craighead County, Arkansas, at age 51.²

     John Gilliland was born circa 1848 at Tennessee.¹ He was the son of Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹ John Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby County, Tennessee, in the household of his parents, Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹

     Kit Gilliland was born circa August 1850 at Tennessee.¹ She was the daughter of Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹ Kit Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby County, Tennessee, in the household of her parents, Samuel B. Gilliland and Eliza McFerrin.¹

     James Gilliland was born between 1791 and 1800.¹ He was the son of John Gilliland and Sarah Berry. (Some people say that James's first wife was Margaret McFerrin but show no date of marriage or source.) James was witness to a land transaction between Wm. McFerrin and Charles Demet recorded on July 29, 1819. The land was located on a fork of Cripple Creek in Rutherford County, Tennessee.² James Gilliland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Rutherford County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male under 10, one male 10-15, one male 26-44, two females under 10, and one female 16-25, with two persons engaged in agriculture.³ On November 15, 1820, James Gilliland and Burton L. Smith, both of Jackson County, Alabama, sold 30 acres of land situated on Brawley's Fork of the East Fork of Stones River in Rutherford County, Tennessee to John Barnes for $225. (Today, Brawley's Creek is in Cannon County, Tennessee.) This land appears to be about 2 miles east of Cripple Creek.⁴ It is not known why James was listed as being from Jackson County, Alabama, although Joseph Sagely, brother-in-law to James, who appeared just a few households away from him on the 1820 census, would wind up living in Jackson County by 1830.⁵

James Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Haywood County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male under 5, two males 5-9, one male 20-29, one male 30-39, one female under 5, one female 5-9, two females 10-14, and one female 50-59 (probably his mother.)¹ He married Anna Farris in 1831.^6,7 James Gilliland died before 19 June 1835 at Haywood County, Tennessee.⁷ His brother Samuel was appointed guardian of his three sons.⁸

     Anna Farris was born on 16 September 1804 at Kentucky.^3,4 She moved with her parents to middle Tennessee in 1812.⁴ She married John Armstrong in December 1818 at Tennessee.⁴ They had four children, three of whose names are known: James, Margaret and Mary.^5,2 He and Ann moved to Haywood County, Tennessee, in 1828. John died August 1829.⁴ Anna Farris married James Gilliland, son of John Gilliland and Sarah Berry, in 1831.^4,1 Anna had three sons by James who died in 1835.² Anna Farris appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Haywood County, Tennessee, enumerated 15 November 1850, living with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and William L. Coppedge. Her son, John F. Gilliland, was also living with them.³ In 1853 Ann moved to Upshur County, Texas.⁴ She died on 29 October 1885 at Upshur County, Texas, at age 81.⁴

     Fletcher McClure Gilliland was born on 1 January 1824 at Tennessee.^3,4 He was the son of James Gilliland.¹ Fletcher McClure Gilliland married Leah Hunter Norfleet on 19 August 1856 at Marshall County, Mississippi.^5,2 Fletcher McClure Gilliland and Leah Hunter Norfleet appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of North Mt. Pleasant, Marshall County, Mississippi, enumerated 26 July 1860. Their daughter Anna was listed as living with them.⁶ Also living with them was 16 year old John Norfleet who could be Mary's brother. Fletcher McClure Gilliland died on 5 October 1905 at Collierville, Shelby County, Tennessee, at age 81.⁴ He was buried at Magnolia Cemetery, Collierville, Shelby County, Tennessee.³ (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

     James L. Gilliland was the son of James Gilliland.¹

     John F. Gilliland was born on 14 September 1832 at Tennessee.^2,3 He was the son of James Gilliland and Anna Farris.¹ John F. Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Haywood County, Tennessee, enumerated 15 November 1850, living in the William L. Coppedge household with his mother Ann Gilliland.² He married Harriet E. R. Norfleet on 3 January 1859 at Marshall County, Mississippi.⁴ John F. Gilliland and Harriet E. R. Norfleet appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of North Mt. Pleasant, Marshall County, Mississippi, enumerated 24 July 1860. Their son Fletcher Norfleet was listed as living with them.⁵ John F. Gilliland and Harriet E. R. Norfleet appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of DeSoto County, Mississippi, enumerated 27 August 1870. Their children Fletcher Norfleet, William R. (Will), Edward C., Lena, Anna, Johnson and Hallie were listed as living with them.⁶ John F. Gilliland and Harriet E. R. Norfleet appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Coldwater, Tate County, Mississippi, enumerated June 1880. Their children Fletcher Norfleet, William R. (Will), Edward C., Lena, Anna, Johnson, Hallie and Eva were listed as living with them.⁷ John F. Gilliland died on 11 January 1895 at Tate County, Mississippi, at age 62.³ He was buried at Magnolia Cemetery, Coldwater, Tate County, Mississippi.³

     Leah Hunter Norfleet was born on 12 July 1835.² She married Fletcher McClure Gilliland, son of James Gilliland, on 19 August 1856 at Marshall County, Mississippi.^3,1 Leah Hunter Norfleet and Fletcher McClure Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of North Mt. Pleasant, Marshall County, Mississippi, enumerated 26 July 1860. Their daughter Anna was listed as living with them.⁴ Leah Hunter Norfleet died on 4 January 1904 at Collierville, Shelby County, Tennessee, at age 68.² She was buried at Magnolia Cemetery, Collierville, Shelby County, Tennessee.⁵ (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

     Fletcher McClure Gilliland was born on 5 July 1861 at Marshall County, Mississippi.^1,2 He was the son of Fletcher McClure Gilliland and Leah Hunter Norfleet.¹ Fletcher McClure Gilliland married Caroline Farabee on 12 January 1883 at Collierville, Shelby County, Tennessee.³ Fletcher McClure Gilliland died on 7 May 1928 at Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, at age 66.¹

     Cora Gilliland was born on 5 July 1861 at Mississippi.¹ She was the daughter of Fletcher McClure Gilliland and Leah Hunter Norfleet.¹ Cora Gilliland died on 25 April 1948 at Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, at age 86.¹

     Ezekiel Arnold was born circa 1794 at North Carolina.^2,3 He married Mary Gilliland, daughter of James Gilliland and Elizabeth ?, on 4 January 1816 at Rutherford County, Tennessee.¹ Ezekiel Arnold and Mary Gilliland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Weakley County, Tennessee, enumerated 30 June 1870.³ Ezekiel Arnold died on 28 January 1874 at Weakley County, Tennessee.²

Jane Gilliland married Joseph Sagely on 29 September 1814 at Rutherford County, Tennessee.² Jane Gilliland died on 3 September 1858 at Grenada County, Mississippi.³ She was buried at Yellow Fever Cemetery, Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi.^3,4

     Joseph Sagely married Jane Gilliland, daughter of John Gilliland and Sarah Berry, on 29 September 1814 at Rutherford County, Tennessee.¹
