Gililland and Nancy Stevens, on 4 February 1867 at Washington County, Arkansas.¹ Mary Jane Kinnebrough and John Sanford Gililland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Round Prairie, Benton County, Arkansas, enumerated 29 August 1870, living in the George Bullion household. Their children Edgar Allen and James Kinnibrough were listed as living with them.³ Mary Jane Kinnebrough and John Sanford Gililland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Wise County, Texas, enumerated June 1880. Their children Edgar Allen, James Kinnibrough, Almer Lee, John Porter, Minnie Ola and William Walter were listed as living with them.⁴ Mary Jane Kinnebrough and John Sanford Gililland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Decatur, Wise County, Texas, enumerated 8 June 1900. GULFPORT --- Emmett "Pewee" Gilliland, 63, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, in Gulfport.
Mr. Gilliland was a dispatcher-manager for a trucking company. He was a Navy veteran and a member of Belaire Baptist Church in Gulfport.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtice Gilliland of Gulfport; a son, Gary Wayne Gilliland of Gulfport; a daughter, Patricia Elaine Ridge of Saucier; a brother, William Albert Gilliland of Jackson; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. today at Moore Funeral Home in Wiggins with services at 3:30 at Bond Cemetery.

     Clara Lee ? was born circa 1901 at Arizona.¹ She married Robert Carl Gilliland, son of George Cloud Gilliland and Edith Jane Harris.¹ Clara Lee ? and Robert Carl Gilliland appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Eagle, Greenlee County, Arizona, enumerated 3 April 1930.¹ Also living with them was Clara Lee's son, Charles Gatlin, age 10, from her first marriage. Clara Lee ? and Robert Carl Gilliland appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Morenci, Greenlee County, Arizona, enumerated 23 April 1940, along with his step-son, Charles.²

     Strother Laurence Gilliland was born circa 1810 at Tennessee, based on the ages of his children.¹ He was the son of Alexander Gilliland and Susanna Strader. Strother Laurence Gilliland was probably one of the two males age 15 to 19 listed in the household of his father, Alexander Gilliland, in the 1830 Federal Census of Jackson County, Alabama.² Strother Laurence Gilliland married Mary Ann Griffis, daughter of John Griffis and Sarah ?.³ On April 10, 1843, Strother purchased two 80 acre tracts of public land in Greene County, Missouri. The first one was located in the E½ of the SE¼ of Section 11, Township 30, Range 23W and the second one was located in the W½ of the SW¼ of Section 12, Township 30, Range 23W. On October 12, 1843, Strother, of Greene County, Missouri, made out his Last Will & Testament.³ Strother Laurence Gilliland died between 12 October 1843 and 8 November 1843 at Greene County, Missouri.³

Strother was the subject of a biographical sketch in the book Opening the Ozarks : first families in southwest Missouri, 1835-1839, published in 2005.⁴ According to this biography, Strother and his wife Mary Ann were originally from Lincoln County, Tennessee, and came to Greene County, Missouri with her parents John and Sarah Griffis.

According to the book A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region, Strother's father was Alexander Gilliland, a native of South Carolina.⁵

     Mary Ann Griffis was born circa 1816 at Tennessee.³ She was the daughter of John Griffis and Sarah ?^4,5 Mary Ann Griffis married Strother Laurence Gilliland, son of Alexander Gilliland and Susanna Strader.¹ Mary Ann Griffis married Thomas J. M. Hawkins on 9 May 1844 at Greene County, Missouri.^6,2 Mary Ann Griffis and Thomas J. M. Hawkins appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Robinson township, Greene County, Missouri, enumerated 14 September 1850.³ Mary Ann Griffis died in 1856 at Missouri.²
