Their daughter Margaret (Emily) was listed as living with them.¹ His occupation was carpenter. (On the page before John was Joseph Gilliland, mistakenly listed as Geo. E. Gillaland. Both were born in North Carolina within two years of each other. It's a good possibility that they were brothers.)

On June 30, 1856, John purchased a little over 3 acres of land in Madison County, District No. 3, from Andrew Arwine for $27.60.⁴

John Gilliland died intestate in 1870 (day and month not noted in probate papers found) at Madison County, Tennessee.^6,7 At the time of his death his only children living were Josiah and Mary. The following papers were in the probate file for John's estate.^6,7

But, according to the probate file for John, he only had two living children, Josiah and Mary, at the time of his death.)

Josiah (Joseph) Gilliland married Sarah Elizabeth Barton on 1 February 1874 at Gibson County, Tennessee.⁴

On July 26, 1875, Josiah and his wife Sarah, sold his half of a 116 acre tract of land on Dry Creek in Madison County, Tennessee, to John F. Brinkley for $1000. John Brinkley was his brother-in-law.⁵ On August 4, 1875, Josiah, who was still living in Madison County, Tennessee, purchased 50 acres of land in Gibson County from John A. and Hester Ann Spencer for $1400.⁶
