     James Evans Gilliland was born on 12 October 1823 at Georgia (1860 and 1870 censuses says South Carolina, Civil War file says Pendleton County, South Carolina, 1880 census says Alabama, death record says Georgia.)1,2 He married Elizabeth Davis in 1843.1 James Evans Gilliland and Elizabeth Davis appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of DeKalb County, Alabama, enumerated 8 July 1860. Their children Elizabeth A., Harriet M. C., Mary J., James R., John Calvin, Amanda C., Jesse Benjamin, George W. and Andrew Jack were listed as living with them.3 (There was a Jesse Gilliland who appeared on the 1860 Federal Census for DeKalb County, Alabama, in the same area, Lebanon, as James Evans. Jesse was on page 47 and James on page 51.)

On March 18, 1864, James enlisted in the army at Larkinsville, Jackson County, Alabama, for a period of three years. He served as a private in Company I of the 12th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. He was went to the general hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas and was discharged from there on September 12, 1865.

On December 3, 1867, James purchased two tracts of land, each containing 50 acres, in Dickson County, Tennessee, from Robert R. Warmack for $600.4 James Evans Gilliland and Elizabeth Davis appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dickson County, Tennessee, enumerated 5 July 1870. Their children William Brinkley, Jesse Benjamin, Andrew Jack and George W. were listed as living with them.5 On May 22, 1879, James and Elizabeth sold their two 50 acre tracts of land near the town of White Bluff in Dickson County to T.J. Adkisson and H.R. Shacklett for $524.60.6 James Evans Gilliland and Elizabeth Davis appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, enumerated 2 June 1880. Their children Jesse Benjamin, Andrew Jack and George W. were listed as living with them.7 James Evans Gilliland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, in the household of George W. Gilliland and Geneva Mills.8
