1784, May 26 - Robert Gilliland [Sr.], 120 acres land surveyed on Golden Grove Creek, Ninety-six District. Delivered to Robert Gilliland’s son. Warrant dated May 21, 1784. Grants (Greenville): Book A, page 11.

1785, Apr 17 - Robert Gilliland, 271 acres land surveyed on south branches of Grove Creek of Saluda River, Ninety-six Distict. Warrant dated April 15, 1785. Grants (Greenville): Book B, page 173.

1785, May 20 - Robert Gilliland, 200 acres land surveyed on Reedy fork waters of Reedy River, Ninety-six District. Grants (Greenville): Book B, page 263. [Note: This may be a different Robert Gilliland than the one who had land on Grove Creek, a branch of the Saluda River. The Reedy River is on the east side of Greenville County. In the 1790 Greenville County census, the Reedy River area appears to be around page 111 with names such as Benjamin Pollard, Lazarus Summerlin, Matthew Armstrong, and even a John Gilliland who all owned or were granted land on the Reedy River.]

1785, Jul 14 - Alexander Gilliland, 251 acres land surveyed on north side of Saluda River, Ninety-six District. Grants (Greenville): Book B, page 173. [Alexander’s 251 acres and Robert’s 271 acres bordered each other. Grove Creek branches off the Saluda River to the east of Hurricane Shoal (Pendleton District).]

1786, May 20 - Robert Gilliland, Greenville County, SC, sold 120 acres on Golden Grove Creek (originally granted to Robert Gilliland, on 16 Jul 1784), to William Armstrong, Greenville County, SC, for 100 pounds sterling. Jean Gilliland (wife?) also signed. William Brasher was a witness. [This is Robert, Jr.] Deed (Greenville): Book B, page 4-5. [See 1784, May 21]

1786, Jun 24 - John Gilliland, 165 acres land surveyed on Maypole [Maple] Swamp Creek, a branch of Reedy River, Ninety-six District. Grants (Greenville): Book C, page 89. [Assuming you had to be at least 21 to get land, this John had to be born before 1765.]

1787, Feb 8 - Robert Gilliland, Greenville County, SC, sold 271 acres on south branch of Golden Grove Creek (originally granted to Robert Gilliland on 5 Dec 1785), to William Poke, Greenville County, SC, for 10 pounds sterling. Deed (Greenville): Book A, pages 18-19. (Second deed dated 9 Feb 1787, book A, pages 20-21, for 80 pounds sterling.) [Robert Gilliland is Robert, Sr.]

1787, Mar 9 - George Seaborn, 2400 acres land surveyed that included head branches of Stoney and Rocky Creeks of Reedy River, north of Saluda River, bordering land of John Gilliland. Grants (Greenville): Book C, page 192D.

1789, Aug 25 - John McElroy, late of Laurens Co, SC, sold 300 acres on George’s Creek of Saluda River in Abbeville County, SC (originally granted to Patrick Rylie on January 1, 1787 and sold to John McElroy on April 1, 1788.) to Robert Gilliland, Greenville Co, SC, for 40 pounds sterling. Recorded May 10, 1790. Deed (Anderson): Book A, pages 46-47.

1790, May 1 - Jacob Gilleylin (Gilliland), Pendleton County, SC, sold 250 acres on Governors Creek waters of Rocky River (originally granted to Jacob Gilliland [Gellilen on the plat] on October 2, 1786), to James Brown, Pendleton County, SC, for 50 pounds. Witnesses: Thomas Turner, John Evans, Thomas Brown. Recorded January 28, 1795. Deed (Anderson): Book B, page 382. [This Jacob is most likely the son of John Gilleylen and Hester Roome. Governors Creek is near Generostee Creek in Pendleton District. Governors Creek is 7.4 miles ESE of Starr and Generostee Creek is 6.1 miles WSW of Starr. On the 1790 Census for Pendleton you see a James, John and Jacob grouped within two pages of each other. At first I thought that the three were connected. Now I believe that only James and John are connected with James probably being James Gilliland and John possibly being "Old John" who lived to be 116. Jacob is found living right next to two Shields men - William and James. A James Shields married Jane Gilleylen sister to Jacob.]

1790, May 14 - Jacob Gilliland, plat for 87 acres on branch of Generostee Creek, Ninety-Six District, surveyed by William Lesly on July 19, 1787. Names Indexed: James Alexander, William Lesly, William Lesly, Jr., John Simpson, Thomas Turner.

1791, Apr 11 - Greenville County, SC 1790 Federal Census:
page 90 - Gilliland, David 1 - 4 - 3 - 0 - 0
page 106 - Gilliland, William 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0
page 111 - Gilliland, John 1 - 1 - 2 - 0 - 0
page 121 - Gilliland, Robert 2 - 3 - 4 - 0 - 0
These are the only Gillilands in Greenville County in the 1790 Census. I found no land records for David or William. They must be renting.

[Not sure which Robert this is. The two pieces of land on Golden Grove Creek that were surveyed to Robert Gilliland (120 and 271 acres) have been sold. The 120 acres were sold to William Armstong who is listed three people up from Robert on the census. This is more than likely the William Armstrong who, according to his Revolutionary War Pension File, moved to Caldwell County, Kentucky and whose daughter married William Gilliland, son of Alexander Gilliland from Lincoln County, North Carolina. Another note about William Armstrong. One of his sisters, Catherine, married a Brasher. This was also obtained from his pension file. The Robert Gilliland who moved to Roane County, Tennessee married Mary "Polly" Brashear.

The William on image 15 may be connected to Robert as there was a William Gilliland that appeared on the title bond in 1793. Also, William was living next to James Southern. James Southern bought land from William Wood on Golden Grove Creek in 1787. It was part of a tract of land Wood was granted in 1784 which bordered Robert Gilliland’s land.

John may also be connected with Robert as he was living near three Brashear families. Also, in 1796, court records indicate that Mary "Polly" (Brashear) Gilliland was appointed adminstratrix of her husband Robert Gilliland’s estate. A John Gilliland stood bond for her.

David is the one who’s land gets sold by the sheriff in 1830.]

1791, Apr 21 - Laurens County, SC 1790 Federal Census:
p. 439 - Gilliland, Robert 2 - 0 - 4 - 0 - 0
This is the only Gilliland in Laurens County in the 1790 Census. [I’m pretty sure this is the Robert who’s family is found in the Stoddard-Sudduth Papers and on the walterstewart.org web site.]

These are the only Gillilands in Pendleton County in the 1790 Census. [James, John, and Jacob are grouped together. That area of the census appears to cover the Generostee Creek area. See note above for deed on May 1, 1790. The John that married Charity Richardson is on image page 12. He is living two families from Elias Roberts who was the husband of Rebecca Brashear, Mary Brashear’s sister.]

1791, May 4 - Thomas Farrar, Greenville County, SC, sold 149 acres between Golden Grove Creek and Saluda River, to Robert Gilliland, Jr., Greenville County, SC for 25 pounds sterling. Deed (Greenville): Book C, pages 55-57.

1791, Jul 1 - William Fariss, 447 ½ acres land surveyed on long branch of Big Creek, District of Ninety-six in Pendleton County, bordering land of John Gilliland. Grants (Greenville): Vol. 31, page 111. [This is probably the John Gilliland who married Charity Richardson. Big Creek branches west off of the Saluda River and runs through present day Williamston. On the map of this plat John Gilliland’s land looks to be on the west side of the Saluda River in between Big Creek and Brushy Creek around the Hurricane Creek area.]

1791, Dec 2 & 3 - James Nicholson, Greenville County, SC, conveyed to Robert Gilliland, 950 acres on the north side of Saluda River in District Ninety-six, by lease and release for 50 pounds (Wil Gilliland, witness). These 950 acres border land owned by Robert Gilliland (see Grant Book B, page 340). Deed (Greenville): Book C, pages 180-183. [This land was probably on George’s Creek, see August 25, 1789 above.]

1792, Oct 15 - William Lowe, Washington District, Pendleton County, SC, sold 630 acres on Saluda River at the north of Hurricane Creek, Pendleton County (originally granted to William Lowe on June 5, 1786), to Mathias Richardson for 1 pound sterling. 1793, Jun 20 - Robert Gilliland, Sr., Robert Gilliland, Jr., & William Gilliland, Greenville County, SC, entered a Title Bond for 500 pounds (in dollars at 4 shillings and 8 pence to the dollar) written December 28, 1792, to execute good and sufficient title in fee simple for 251 acres of land originally granted to Alexander Gilliland on July 3, 1786, on north side of Saluda River in Greenville County, to Samuel Johnston on or before January 25, 1801.
