Early Egbert Family Record

Church Registry of Meppel, Drenthe, Netherlands

When contacting the Central Bureau Voor Genealogie in Holland we found they did not have a microfilm copy of the church register of Meppel, a town in a province of Dernthe in the Northern part of Holland, they did have an alphabetical index to the most important details in these church registers. The following entries appear in that index:
Married (or have the banns published) Meppel 1640 Feb. 7th: Ebgert Pauwels, from Almelo (prov. Overijssel) and Lammichen Gerrits, from Nijeveen (near Meppel)

Married (or have the banns published) Meppel 1656 Jan. 27th: Lemmetien Gerrits, widow of Egbert Pauwels, and Claes Hermens, from Koekange (prov. Drenthe)

Church Registers and Judicial Archives of the towns and villages of the Province of Drenthe are kept by the State Archive in Assen and they were contacted for full information about the marriage of Pauwels Egbert in 1640. They were able to supply a photocopy of this marriage entry which they have annotated with an English translation.

It would seem that Pauwels Egbert was a bachelor when he married Lammichen Gerrits, spinster, on the 7th February 1640. At that time he was stated to be of Almeloo which was taken to refer to Almelo in the Province of Overijssel.

We wrote to the Rijksarchief in Overijssel and received a response from Jan ten Hove, the 'Genealogical Correspondent of the RIjksarchief in Overijssel'. We were asking for birth or baptismal entries for Pauwel Egbert but unfortunately he could not help us since the birth and marriage records of Almelo only commence in 1700. It would seem that earlier records either were not kept or have not survived. He did not feel there were any sources in the archives which would enable us to learn more about the family.
