C. James Egbert (1772-9/19/1847) came from Staten Is. in 1796 to Warren Co., NJ, m. Rachel Bray (1774-6/16/1860), dau. of Thomas & Elizabeth (Bowlby) Bray. James build sm. house & ran country store then opened tannery. He bought land from Andrew Bray, 4 tracts, & built a fine stone country house across from church. Bishop Ashbury preached in Egbert home until in 1844 a new stone church was erected & given the name of Mt. Bethel, or Egbert Church. Most of family bur. in Egbert Cem. beside church. James was a tall, clean-shaven man with a friendly smile. Justice of the Peace of Co., 1813, 1818, & in Warren Co. in 1825-6.
