Isaac Egbert Family

Stories, Photographs and Information

These photographs furnished by Carolyn Henry with many thanks.

John Isaac Egbert and his son Henry Egbert appear to be dark-skinned, Matilda appears to be mulato.

Photograph probably taken before 1917 when Henry was married.

Matilda (Egbert) WrightNora (Egbert) Hall, Susie (Egbert) Richie and  Frona (Egbert) Miller are  daughters  of John I. Egbert.

Notes by Carolyn Henry, 9/03

When I first saw that photo I about fell over. I had seen the one I sent you, but not this one until I was doing my family history book. That's when one of my second cousins sent the photo. I wish it was a fluke but I can almost bet it isn't.  This is why the whole family just researched the Wrights. No one wanted to know. My grandmother Ida Dean Trump never talked of her heritage. Her brothers wife Ulla tried to find out and Martin said to leave it alone. The picture I sent was taken in Beaver Co, OK circa 1910.

If he truely was mallato that maybe why they always lived among the Indians. They were excepted there. There are no census records available on Indian territory unless you go to Fort Worth, TX to the National Arcives. Those that lived in Indian Territory were counted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. If you want I have other pictures of Matilda Egbert Wright, and one or two of Eliza Seavers but nothing I have found on John Isaac Egbert.

Thank You for your help.

I'm 70 miles from home in McAllen,TX doing some more checking. Today I now know that the Seavers were on the Creek Indian Rolls of 1900. There are Lannings, Lanes on the Cherokee rolls too. And Biggs in NJ that are black. Did you know Catherine Backers grandfather died in the Carribean? Also which families in NJ are bi- racial? Go back to where our trees intersect we might just find the bi- or tri-racial wife. One thing is for sure we can not rewrite history.

Further information is being researched, and any new photographs or references would be appreciated.

Note from Cindy Day McClure 4/07

I was looking at the pictures [sic.- on this page]. I had never seen a picture of my great-grandfather before. I also read the notes about how dark he and my gradfather were. I don't know if this means anything to you, but when I was young my grandfather said his father told him they are Black Dutch. I know there was a group of people who went against Hitler during World War II who were called Black Dutch because of their political stance not their ethniticity. So that didn't really throw any light on my grandfather's heritage and I didn't find any info on any other black dutch people. But my grandfather was quite certain he was Black Dutch. But I also heard it whispered a few times that he was German. This seemed to be the family generality simply because they also didn't know what Black Dutch was. Just thought that might be interesting to you.
