• He immigrated in 1868 to New York. ⁶ ||John stowed away on an oil freighter to avoid being drafted into the German army. He was discovered hiding among the oil barrels, but was not departed because he was fluent in many languages, and was willing to work as an interpreter at Ellis Island.
