| John Lee | Friday July 27, 1906 | "John Lee, one of the oldest residents of this township, passed away at his
home on lot 26 in the 6th con. on Friday evening last in the 72nd year of his
age. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon services being conducted at
the family residence on the Naylor sideroad by Rev. G. B. Ward with
internment in North Ridge cemetery, the pall bearers being John Hopgood,
Joseph Townsend, Arthur Wilson, Simon Smith, Thomas Irwin and Wm. Ellis.
Deceased was born on Dec. 30th, 1834, at Yelvertoft, Northamptonshire,
England, leaving there in 1857 and locating at Avon, Ohio where he remained
until 1859 when he came to Essex Co., from then til 1865 working in a stone
quarry at Avon in the summer and for different farmers in this county in the
winters. In 1865 he married Mary Elizabeth, daughter of the late John
Robinson, who lived on Talbot street, where H. S. Powell now resides, and the
following year they moved to lot 26, in the 6th con., where they resided the
remainder of their lives. In 1873, Mrs. Lee died and in 1876, deceased
married Annie Cleves, of Maryland, who survives him. As a result of the
first union, there were five children, Mrs. R. H. Evans, of Detroit, Mich.;
Mrs. James Chambers, of Wayne, Mich.; Mrs. Charles Delanter, Warren and
William Edward of this township. There were no children by the second union.
He is also survived by two brothers, William, of Essex, and Edward, of
Northamptonshire, and one sister, Mrs. Ed. Kendrick, of Maidstone. The father
of deceased died at the latter's home here in 1888. Deceased was a rugged
typical Englishman, honest, upright and industrious and always enjoyed good
health till about a year ago when he was taken down with general debility and
Bright's disease and has since been gradually failing. He was at one time a
member of the Orange order, but never joined any other society."
