Charles Alexander Montgomery
Hill (38) was born on
the Hill Homestead in Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania
on 18 March 1854, twin brother of Joseph
Merriam Hill (271). He is the son of Timothy
F. Hill (83) and Sarah Montgomery
(84).
Charles married Margaret R. Chappell (39) before 1883.
Margaret is a daughter of Jason
William Saulis Chappell (207) and Hannah
T. Gibson (208). Together they had five daughters: Eva
Kay (40), Grace Isobel (41), Margaret (43),
Sara Ethel (23) and Helen DeFrance (42).
Charles and Margaret and their family lived in Oil City, Venango
County, PA where Charles was an inspector for an oil company.
He toured the oil fields on horseback. Charles was also an inventor,
inventing things to make life easier around the oil fields as
well as around the home, a talent he apparently inherited from
his father.
The family later moved to Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA. This
move occurred some- time 1885, when Charles and Maggie sold a
building lot in Oil City, and 1892, when they sold a second lot
in Oil City. Charles built a house at 205
Tullymet Street in Hazelwood. This house still stands as
of this writing (1994).
After Margaret died, daughter Eva lived with him. When Eva married
Ellis Wilson (167), daughter Sara
Hill Jackson (23)
and her family moved in to take care of him. Charles died soon
thereafter, on 7 November 1930, aged 76 years, 7 months and 20
days.
The funeral service was held at the home of daughter Margaret
Hill Flatley (43), 912 Berkshire Avenue in Brookline, Pittsburgh
at 2:30 pm on 10 November. The funeral service was performed
by the Reverend Arthur W. Davies who took as his text John 14:2
"In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not
so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?"
Charles and Magaret are buried in Homewood
Cemetery, Section 19, Lot 342, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
