Timothy F. Hill (83) was born in Fairfield Township, Crawford
County, PA, on 6 October 1805. He is a son of Archibald
Hill (210) and Mary Fulton
(211). He inherited and lived on the farm established
by his father.
Timothy married Sarah
Montgomery (84) on 1 November 1827. Sarah was born about
1809 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and is a daughter of James Montgomery (212)
and Sarah Fulton (213).
Family oral history claims that Timothy and Sarah together had
eighteen children. From notes of Mary Hill (511), and
notes of Laura Hill Young (275),
the fact of eighteen children has been confirmed, and the fact
that not all lived into adulthood. Among these were Mary
(511), born 12 Dec 1828; Sarah
(362), born 24 April 1830; Archibald
(425), born 21 December 1831; Margaret
(527), born 11 August 1833; Esther
(375), born 31 May 1835; James
(429), born 6 July 1837; Elizabeth
(428), born 8 Feb 1838; John
(424), born 23 Sep 1841; Isabella
(225), born 1 August 1843; Georgiana
(377), born 3 August 1849; Emma
(387), born 26 Feb 1850 (Emma died at the age of 16);
William Bates (158), born
12 October 1852; twin boys, Charles
Alexander Montgomery (38) and Joseph
Merriman (271), born 18 March 1854; and Arthur
(157), born 31 October 1856. Other children included
Samuel, born 12 Dec 1844, who died at age three, an infant daughter
born 2 June 1840, who died young, and an infant son, born 16
January 1847, who died young. The 1840 census shows four girls
and two boys. Timothy and family do not appear on the 1850 census.
Two sons, Archibald and John, and a future son-in-law, Orrie Turner (258), fought in the
Civil War. Archibald was a member of the 12th Iowa Volunteer
Infantry Regiment. John and Orrie were members of the 52nd Illinois
Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Both of these units took part in
some of the fiercest fighting of the western campaigns, including
Shiloh.
When his mother, Mary, died in 1845, Timothy became Administrator
of the Hill estate. Timothy eventually transferred 150 acres
of the original estate to his brother Samuel
(374), and another 35 acres to his son James M. Hill
(429). The 1870
Agricultural Schedule for Crawford County,
PA shows how well each of these farms wa doing in 1870.
A 'T. Hill' was a trustee of the Fairfield Congregation of the
Associated Presbyterian Church in 1844 when land for the church
was deeded by James Mumford. The present day Mumford Cemetery
in Fairfield Township now stands on this land. This T. Hill may
have been Timothy.
The Gazetteer and Business Directory of Crawford County for
1874 lists Timothy Hill as a produce dealer. Timothy may
have gone into the produce business after he sold the farm to
his son, John, in 1871.
Timothy Hill died a bankrupt
on 28 June 1884 in Mercer County, PA. He is buried in Conneaut
Cemetery. After Timothy's death, Sarah lived with her youngest
son, Arthur (157). In July 1893, she claimed residency in Deer
Creek Township, Mercer County, PA, where Arthur lived. Sarah
died in 9 February 1894 in her 85th year, and is buried with
Timothy in Conneaut
Cemetery,
Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
