Shores

Mildred Louise Shores was the daughter of Floyd Atkinson Shores and Nellie Palmer. She was born July 10, 1917 in Altoona, Lake Co., Florida. She was raised in this little country town surrounded by orange groves, lakes and lots of cousins. She was tall and thin with dark hair and freckles, an odd combination. She got the freckles from her father, who had red hair. Her nickname was "Billie". She married Oley Adkins, whom she met on the school bus..... he was the driver! She and Oley had two daughters, Linda and Pat. She worked many years for Sears and retired. She died from Alzheimer's disease , September 5, 1998.She is buried beside Oley in Cedar Hill Memory Gardens, Daytona Beach, Florida.

Floyd Atkinson Shoreswas the son of William Greenberry Shores and Georgia C. Atkinson. He was born April 23, 1889 in Lake County, Florida. He was the only son . He was tall , red-haired with freckles. He married Nellie Palmer on January 6 1909 Lake County. They were childhood friends, both grew up in the same little village. In the early 1920s he took his wife and daughters to Miami to live for a while. During the Great Depression he went north to Canada to work and left the family behind. After he returned to Florida he operated an automobile garage for a while and then in later years worked for Lake County as a truck driver. Sometime during his life, it was said that he broke his back. I know he was rather stooped when he got old. He liked to gamble and often bet on dog races. He also liked to fish, and died doing it. He drowned in Lake Dorr near Pittman, Florida. He had never learned to swim and fell overboard from his fishing boat. His great grandson, Neil White, four years old, was with him. The little boy stayed in the boat alone for hours until a rescue boat found him. Floyd died April 16, 1960 and is buried beside Nellie in the Glendale Cemetery, Umatilla, Fla. He and Nellie had four daughters, Eileen Shores White, Bernice died as an infant, Mildred Shores("Billie") Adkins, and Nell Marie( "Mutt") Grew.

William Greenberry Shoreswas born November 18, 1850 in Wilkinson County, Georgia. He was the son of Alexander Shores and Sarah Ann Mathis. He married Georgia C. Atkinson in Terrell County, Georgia on July 4, 1881. They must have moved to Lake County Florida soon after they were married because in 1884 she was listed as a resident of Orange County, Florida in the Terrell County property records when she sold the land she inherited from her father. W.G.Shores was the owner of a large packing house in Altoona and lived in one of the nicest houses in the area at the time. Their children were Florence Edith Shores Williams, Myrta Shores Brantley, Floyd Atkinson Shores, and Eva Shores Jarrett. William G. Shores died on Christmas day 1930 and is buried along with his wife Georgia in the Glendale Cemetery, Umatilla, Fla.
