Michael McDermott
Headstone located in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, New Boston, Town of Pinckney, Lewis County, New York

Michael McDermott, 85, of 117 North Hamilton street, retired town of Pinckney farmer, died this morning at 2:45 in the House of the Good Samaritan as a result of the fall in the back yard of his home Friday afternoon in which he fractured his left hip.

Mr. McDermott’s fall was apparently caused by a sudden stroke. He was standing in the yard talking to men who were washing windows of the house when he suddenly became dizzy, lost his balance and fell. X-ray pictures taken after he was removed to the hospital disclosed the fracture.

On Saturday, he became unconscious and remained in a coma until his death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 from the home, 117 North Hamilton street and at 10 from Holy Family church. Burial will be made in St. Peter’s and Paul’s cemetery New Boston.

Surviving Mr. McDermott are his sister, Miss Mary A. McDermott, with whom he resided, and a niece, Miss Anna Burke, town of Pinckney. He was unmarried.

He was born Aug. 30, 1863, in the town of Pinckney, near Barnes Corners, a son of the late Thomas and Jane Burke McDermott, who were natives of Ireland. The early part of his life was spent in the town of his birth and he was educated in the town’s schools. His father died when he was a boy. Thereafter, Mr. McDermott and other members of the family operated the farm.

Later, Mr. McDermott moved to Dubois, Pa., where for 17 years he was employed in a hotel. Nearly 40 years ago he returned to the town of Pinckney and was employed on the Burke farm, near Barnes Corners. About 15 years ago he retired.

In the fall of 1936 he moved to Watertown to reside. With his sister, Mary A., he purchased the North Hamilton street home, where they since resided.

Mr. McDermott was a member of the Holy Family Church.
