DESCENDANTS OF ANSEL ASA FAY
|
Charles was born in February, 1807 (census of 1900; LDS says 2/17/1805 and gives 2/12/1901 as the date of Charles' death). He was married twice, first to Asenath Carey. Their marriage was reported on January 7, 1831. She died August 28, 1835, at the age of 34 years. The date of her death is taken from her tombstone in Brandon (she is buried with her parents). Charles' second wife was Abigal Bailey, who was born in July, 1827. Both Charles and Abigal lived until after June 1900. In the census listing of 1850, Charles is 44, and Abigal is 24. With them are four children: Elizabeth, 16, Alonzo, 20, Wallace 12, and George, 2. Of these the only one clearly Abigal's is George. The others are much too old to be her children. Wallace was born about 1838; and George 10 years later. Abigal had four children (according to the census of 1900); the names of three are known. The dates of Wallace's birth and Asenath's death don't quite agree. Wallace appears in at least four census records, and in each case, his birth is reported to 1838. If Asenath's death was actually later than 1835, it would make more sense.

In the census of 1850, Charles' oldest son is called Alonzo; he is 20. After 1850, we see Charles A. or C.A. with the same birth date in the same families. Charles A. is with Chauncey in 1860; by 1870, he has started his own household. LDS says definitely that Charles A. is the son of Charles and Asenath. For this reason, I have identified him as Charles Alonzo. |

Harrison, born January 5, 1811, appears in the census from 1850 through 1880; he died February 13, 1900. In the census of 1900, Philena, his wife, born October 1817 (according to the census; her tombstone has March 21, 1816), is a widow. She died March 21, 1901. Both are said to have been born in Vermont in all of the census records. There is no record that I can find of Harrison in 1840, although it seems that he and Philena must have married about 1838. They are not living with her father nor with his that I can tell. By 1850, however, it is easier to follow them. They were living in Middlebury, a couple of houses away from his brother Charles and a couple of houses away from her parents, Ebenezer and Betsy "Lamphire" (the indexer saw "Lampkin" but that is simply wrong). The name has also appeared as "Lamphere" and "Lamphear." There is no standard spelling for this name until later.
Harrison's wife's name is recorded as "Philena" in every census and on her tombstone. On the other hand, on the marriage license of her daughter Augusta (Augusta's second marriage, dating to 1908), her name is given as "Amanda Lanpher."
Harrison and Philena remain within this small area in Vermont, but they move a couple of times. Sometime between 1850 and 1860, they move to Pittsford in Rutland County; then by 1870, they are in Goshen, Addison County, where they remain.

Chauncey was born April 22, 1820, and died December 6, 1890. His wife was Aurilla Churchill, daughter of Ebenezer and Louise Cook Churchill. She was born June 16, 1822, and died exactly 77 years later, according to the dates found on her tombstone. Chauncey and Aurilla had 5 children. Of these, only two reached adulthood. Their daughter Luzernia married after June 2,1870; but she must have died at the birth of her first child, for she died in February 1872. Chauncey's son Ellsworth married and had one daughter; he died before he was 48. Florence and Ellsworth had been living in New York; she returned to Benson, Vermont; but there is no sign of what happened to Edith.

There is almost no information about Hezekiah that I have been able to find. He was buried close to Chauncey in the cemetery at Hubbardton. His tombstone says that he died on February 17, 1875, aged 52 years. This takes his birth to 1823. He seems to appear on the census of 1850 in New York; a lawyer, age 27, with a wife Phebe D. She is 25. With them is 15 year old Oliver Baker. Oliver is still in Potsdam in 1860; he is married and has a small child. But there is no sign of Hezekiah or Phebe. If Hezekiah did not die until 1875, he must have been alive in 1860 and 1870, but where?
