Note: Dewitt had filed for an increase in benefits (at least that is the way I read it), and he had filed from Michigan and given an Ontario post address. The pension authorities needed to be sure that he was a citizen of the United States. The affidavit not only identifies Robert as Dewitt's father; it also places Dewitt's birth, and hence his parents' residence in the "Half Acre"--one more firm link with the Reeds and the Fays.

Personally before me Cyrus O. Cook a Notary Public in and for the County and State Aforesaid came James C. Reed residing at No 189 Genesee Street in the City of Auburn County of Cayuga & State of New York aged 82 years and Halsey W. Taylor residing at No 8 Chestnut Street Same City, aged 80 years, both well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit and who being by me duly sworn according to law depose and say that they know the father ande mother of Dewitt C. Skadan & that both were citizens of the town of Aurelius County of Cayuga and State of New York both before and after the birth of Dewitt C. Skadan. James C. Reed says that to the best of his knowledge and belief said Skadan was born at what was called the Half Acre in said town of Aurelius and to the best of his recollection said Skadan was born about the year 1828. Mr. Taylor says that he knew Robert Skadan father of Dewitt C. Skadan before the birth of said Dewitt and that to the best of his recollection said Dewitt was born at time and place mentioned above by Mr Reed and that the above is undoubtedly a true statement as to the fact that Dewitt C. Skadan was born a citizen of the United States.
