Stanley Fay
And his Story

Based on information provided by Patty Fay Chapman
Additions by Charles Darwin Fay and Tracey Fay Lesosky

Stanley Fay was not a descendant of John Fay of Marlborough; in fact, Stanley was not a Fay at all by birth. He was born in Ohio on November 11, 1922, lived in Michigan and California, and died in California on September 23, 1986. His name appears both on the Social Security list and on the California list, where his mother's maiden name is given as "Lenyel."

Stanley's father was Karoly Janovics, who arrived in New York from Hungary on February 6, 1921. He was 34. He was travelling with his father, Karoly Janovics age 62, who was a widower and, according to the ship's manifest, had doctor certified "senility which affects etc" [sic]. The younger Karoly also had a wife and two children with him. Thus there were five in the group, which sailed from Rotterdam on the ship Ryndam on January 25, 1921: Karoly, age 62, widower, engineer, senile; Karoly, age 34, son of the elder, chemist, husband of Magdolna, age 30, and father of two children, Janka (Jane), age 7, and a third Karoly, age 2.

Their last place of residence was Mezoberem c. Bekes, Hungary.

They were headed to Akron, Ohio, to join Eugen Janovics, the brother of Karoly age 34 and son of Karoly age 62. Eugen's full address is given as Akron, Ohio, 65 Stanton Ave.

Also given on the form is the name and complete address of the nearest relative in the country from which the alien came. This family had been staying with the elder Karoly's Father in law, Jacob Kuhn, Mezoberem, C. Bekes, who was thus the grandfather of Karoly, age 34, greatgrandfather of the children. The inclusion of this name provides us with information for one further generation back.

Family stories report the death of Karoly's first wife Magdolna on the ship, but there is no evidence for that on the manifest, and it looks very much as if she was in fact alive at the time of arrival. She may have contacted the illness that was to kill her on the ship, but not died until after reaching land. She did die, however, and it must have been soon, for Karoly remarried a woman named Maria Lenyel (or Lengyel or Lengyl; the name has many variants), and Stanley was born in late 1922. I have tried to find out more about Maria, but I do not see her in the census of 1920, and I did not find her at Ellis Island. According to the census of 1930, she arrived in 1912 from Czechoslovakia.

After I found out that Karoly was joining Eugen, I searched Ellis Island for him, and found him under the name Jens [obviously a shortened version of Eugen] Janovics, leaving from Le Havre on March 16, 1912, on the Rochambeau, and arriving in New York on March 26, 1912. He is travelling with his wife Emilie [or Emilia], age 18. He is a laborer. The identification is confirmed by the name of Jens' closest relative: his father Janovics, Karoly in Mezeberemy Hungary. With this and other information I had, it was possible to identify Jens Janovics as Eugene Janovich of the 1920 Ohio census, and in turn as William Eugene Fay, in the census of 1930.

There is supposed to be another brother, Leo, who also changed his identity to Fay, and lived in California and in Tennessee. I have not found him yet. In view of the fact that we know of Charles, Eugene, and Leo from Hungary, it is interesting to see that Eugene's children include Eugene, Leo and Robert.

Eugene Janovics seems to have changed his name twice, first to Eugene Fay, and then within the next ten years, to William Eugene Fay. I do not know why the second change, unless William was his middle name and he decided to use it in the census of 1930. Karoly also changed his name in two stages, first by latinizing his first name from Karoly to Charles, and then sometime after 1930 from Charles Janovics (which is the 1930 listing) to Charles Fay, the name by which the rest of the family remains known.
