Jonathan and Fanny Swap Fay were buried in a small cemetery in New Boston, Wayne County, Michigan. This cemetery was also known as the Fay Cemetery. Thanks to the generosity of Connie Carpenter, we have photographs of the cemetery and their stones. Connie has published the inscriptions to the Cemetery Transcription Library at Interment.net and sent pictures of the specific gravestones in private correspondence. Many thanks to her from all of us.

The first picture shows the group of three stones in this Fay plot. On the left, a marker for three people; on the right, Jonathan; and in front, Clara Ryan.

We all do fade as a leaf

--A quotation from the Bible: "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Isaiah 64:6 KJV"
--note that the dates are just slightly different than found in other sources.

The second stone on the plot marks the burial of three people: Fanny S. Fay; Ann Fay; and Laura Swap.

LAURA
WIFE OF
J. SWAP
DIED Feb. 5, 1847
AGED 54 Years

--There is an inscription but I cannot read it.
--The full names and lineage of Fanny Swap's parents are unknown. This stone, showing Fanny the daughter of J. and Laura Swap, may help to solve the mystery.

--On the back of the stone with Laura's inscription is one for Ann; and on the side between Laura and Ann is just barely visible in this picture the inscription for Fanny. Beyond can be seen the marker for Clara.

Fanny S. Fay

----The burial of a second daughter of Jonathan and Fanny is marked by the third stone on the plot. Clara or Clarissa Fay is here with her parents. Clara M. Ryan's husband's first name was James per her death certificate. She was widowed at the time of her death in the city of Detroit. Her death certificate shows her burial in the Fay Cemetery, providing identification of the Huron Township Cemetery as the Old Fay Cemetery
