Census information for John Packard Fay and his family |
| |
In 1850, John Packard is living in Lima, Allen Co., Ohio, with his wife Mary Ann (age 31) and children, David S., age 22 (son by John's first wife Eleanor); John H., 17, Ellen I., 15, Joseph E., 11, Horace H., 7, and Azubah, 1. John was born in Vermont; all the others in Ohio.
By 1860, John and his family have moved to Jackson Township in Linn Co., Iowa. David has his own household. Ellen, and John are missing from the family. Joseph, Horace and Azubah have been joined by Eliza C., born in Iowa. Since she is 5, the move must have taken place between 1850 and 1855. We know from another source that it was 1854. With them is Catharine Hanson, age 64. She is Mary Ann's mother, Catharine Ward, remarried to Benjamin Hanson, and widowed a second time.

David S., the son of John P., is now 32 and has his own household. He is living with his wife Elizabeth (age 30) in Spring Grove, Linn County. He has two daughters, Nancy ED (the writing of her name will continue to give recorders difficulty) age 4, and Ida May, age 2.
| |
John (64), Mary (51) and Eliza (15). There is also a girl, Jane, who is 9. She is listed after Eliza without a change of last name. There is every reason to believe that this was really Jane Ward (see the 1880 information), who was Mary Ann's niece. Also with them, Robert Bradshaw, who is 30.
The household also contains three more people: Laura Phillip, who is 5 months old. J. S. Ward, age 29, and Josephine Ward, age 20, are also here. Attempts have been made to trace these Wards, but without success so far.

DS in Spring Grove. Elizabeth is missing. Nancy (her name is spelled very creatively) and Ida are with him.
| |
Joseph E., his wife Elizabeth, along with their three children, and Horace, his brother, with his wife Clarissa, and their three children, are in Newton, Buchanan County, Iowa, in 1870.

John Packard has gone, and Mary is now a widow. She is living with her daughter Eliza, Eliza's husband Filmore Bradshaw, and two grandchildren. Mary Ann's niece, Jane Ward, lives with them. This is Eliza Jane Ward, 1860 - 1939, who went to live with her aunt at the death of her mother in 1862.
