Jonas Fay (11/14/1768 - 10/30/1830) And his Descendants |
|
Jonas' birth in Hardwick to Reuben and Elizabeth is listed by Orlin, registered in Hardwick, and published in a well documented genealogy at NEHGS. There are two dates given, November 11 and November 14; I suspect that one is birth and one is registration. The genealogical record at NEHGS is found in the Register for 1986, volume 140, pp. 291ff. This is entitled The Daniel Shays Family, and contains some information about Daniel's father and siblings. One of those siblings is Margaret Shay, who married Elijah Barnes in Hardwick. They had a daughter named Polly or Mary. The record then continues: |
"Polly, b. at Hardwick, Mass., 9 July 1778; d. at Royalton, Vt., 14 April 1841; m. Jonas Fay, b. at Hardwick, Mass., 15 Nov. 1768, d. at Royalton, 30 Oct. 1830, son of Reuben and Elizabeth (Perkins) Fay" [page 393]. |
This confirms what LDS also says, that Jonas married Mary Barnes in Royalton. Orlin does not tell us anything of Jonas' marriage or children, and the Shay genealogy tells us nothing about the children of Jonas and Mary. |
While continuing to hunt for more information, I ran across a reference to a book on the Royalton website. This book was Evelyn M. Wood Lovejoy's History of Royalton, Vermont : with family genealogies, 1769-1911, Royalton, Vt.: The Town and the Royalton Woman's Club, 1911. It turned out to be available on genealogy.com, and it proved to have exactly the information I wanted. All of the children of Jonas and Mary were listed, along with marriage information in most cases, and descendants in many cases. What is below owes most to that book, and the rest to census documents and other sources. With one exception, and that is the case of the oldest son, Silas. THAT page is still under construction, but will be coming soon. |
