Josephine's story begins with Charles Lambert Fay, the son of Lambert Fay and Abigail Stafford. Lambert and Abigail had 12 children (see the full discussion of Lambert's line and ancestry. In 1850, the three youngest children are still home: Charles L., Martha E. and Ellen are living in Bath with Lambert and his second wife Martha. |
In 1860, Charles is still in Bath, working as bartender in a hotel run by his brother Sylvester G. Fay. Charles is single. |
By 1870, he is married to Calista A. Secor, daughter of W. Secor and Lusylvia. Calista seems to have been born about 1843. They have one son, Charles L. age 7, born 1863. Martha, the widow of Lambert, is living with Charles and Calista. She is 69 now, born 1801. |
By 1880, Charles L. Fay senior is dead, and his widow Calista is living alone with her mother. There is no sign of Charles L. Jr., who would now be 17. |
About 1895, Charles married a woman from Canada, Adeline (Adaline) Thornton. Adeline was born March 1869 in Canada. The census of 1900, in Bath, shows them with two children, Mary Josephine, born January 1896, and Katherine, born June 1897. The next census in which I have found them, that of 1920, adds two more children: George L., born 1906, and Rose H., born 1908. George L. is George Lambert, who is mentioned in the obituary below. |

Katherine, Josephine's younger sister, married Carrol A. Austin about 1914, when she was 16 (1930 census evidence). It was her first marriage, Carrol's second. In 1910, Carrol was married to a Catheryn; they had five children. She was 27; and NY, Canada East, NY. The census of 1920 shows Carrol and Katherine, with the children of his first marriage: the same five children plus one more who was born about 1911. Then there is a gap of 6 years, during which time Carrol married Katherine Fay. After his marriage to Katherine, three more children were born, William E. in 1916, Lambert D. in 1922, and at least one more son, Kenneth, born toward the end of 1919. Katherine G. is said to be 35, a clear mistake (she was 22), and she is NY NY NY. |
Carrol died after 1922, and Katherine married Elijah Odell. They were married in about 1925. They are together in the census of 1930, where she is 32 and he is 25. With Katherine and Elijah are Katherine's two sons by her first marriage, William E. Austin, 14, and Lambert D. Austin, 8. |
Josephine married John Whitford about 1929. She and John are living in the household of her mother Mary A. Fay, a widow, in the census of 1930. Josephine is 34, John 42. No children yet. |
The third sister, Rose H. Fay, married Roland Peacock in 1927 or 1928. Their daughter Virginia R., was born in 1928; she was 1 and 4 months in April of 1930. |
George Lambert Fay, Josephine's brother, married Florence about 1925; they did not yet have children in 1930.
