Mary and Moses Sr. had traveled from Massachusetts to New York. Some of their children stayed in New York; others sought the less populated lands in Ohio. According to modern measurements, this is a journey of 400 miles, taking about 7 1/2 hours. It would be fascinating to know how long it actually took these first settlers. |

Those who moved from New York to Ohio seem to have done so in two major groups. There are none of this family in Ohio in 1830. Shortly before 1840, probably about 1839, William, Moses Jr., Franklin and Clement arrived in Ohio; the dating can be approximated by the birthplaces and dates of the children. The 1840 Census shows us all of these (click here to see a summary of the census evidence).
The next wave came between 1840 and 1850, and brought Lewis and Willis. Then between 1850 and 1860, Samuel arrived.
This list may be missing a couple of names; we are working on it. |
