The impetus for this page came when I saw an 1880 census listing for "Martin W. Fay" in Maine, and could not place him at all. Further study and a reexamination of the writing of the census taker, both for 1880 and for 1900, which, if anything, was worse, showed that the name was actually "Newton" and not "Martin." Once I had determined that, it was a simple matter to track him back; tracking his line forward was much more difficult, since both Leon and Earnest Roy left Maine after 1900. The evidence for Leon's movements is firm and convincing; I am not so sure about Earnest. I believe that Earnest, whose name is also spelled Ernest, and who seems to use Ray and Roy, went to North Carolina and then to Pennsylvania, with Grace, his wife, returning as a widow to her native Virginia. Leon, on the other hand, went to Massachusetts; he married there, and had two children; there he died, leaving Celia a young widow with the two children. She returned briefly to her parents, keeping the children with her, and eventually remarried. Leon, the younger son and namesake of his father, seems to have gone to Tufts, earned an A.B. and S.T.B., and become a minister in the Unitarian Church, moving to New Hampshire and then eventually to New Mexico, where he died. |

It was easier to follow Isabelle, the daughter of Newton and May, for she married in Maine, and her marriage is clearly marked in the records. It was a simple matter to follow the family to 1930. I found an obituary notice for Jean, one of the daughters, which provided more information on the family. |
