The name "Watson Fay" caught my eye several times in the course of researching other lines, and I decided to see what I could learn about him or them. I found at least five people with this name; there may have been others I did not find. Only two of them are known to Orlin. Discussed below are:

WATSON FAY, 1813

Watson Fay, born September 26, 1813 in New York, was the son of Benajah F. Fay (7/28/1773 - 4/15/1860) and Mary Ramsdell. His birth is listed by James Shreve, Sr., the authority on Benajah and his line. Nothing further seems to be known of him: Shreve has no further information and I have not been able to find anything more about him. I assume that he died in childhood.

WATSON FAY, 1847

Watson Fay, born in 1846 or 1847 in Ohio, is a complete mystery. He appears as a boy of 13, in the census of 1860 in Greenfield, Huron County, Ohio. He is one of seven people sharing a house, all with different last names; it might be a boarding house. No occupation is given for Watson. The head is Baizilla King, a woman of 40, from New York. In the same town, Greenfield, and actually just a few houses away, there is another isolated Fay, a woman by the name of Cecelia Fay, age 36, born in Ireland. With Cecelia are two sons, Martin, age 14; and Richard, age 12. I think that Watson belongs in that family. Repeated efforts to track the family before this or after this have produced no results at all. I would guess that Cecelia remarried, and the boys took their stepfather's last name, but I really don't know.

WATSON FAY, 1849

With Watson Fay, born November 7, 1849, in Becket, Berkshire, MA, we are on sure footing again. Watson is shown in the census of 1850 for Becket. His father was Warren and his mother was Jane Diantha Bell. He was the second child of Warren and Jane; the older Monroe also appears in the census of 1850. By 1860, Warren is gone; he died young, at the age of 41. Jane is supporting herself and younger children by working as a seamstress. Watson is 11; and Jane's youngest daughter Martha Jane is 5. Watson died on December 6, 1866, at the age of 17. He and his family are listed in Orlin.

WATSON FAY, 1860

Watson J. Fay, born 7/21/1860, reported in Orlin as the son of John William Fay and Mary Holden, was the second cousin, twice removed, of Watson L. Fay, born 11/14/1901, son of Alfred Nathan Fay (7/19/1869-6/16/1964) and Jennie Laura Abbe.

John William Fay was born in Faytown, Onondaga County, NY, in 1832. He married in NY apparently, but moved very soon to Quincy, Branch County, Michigan, where Watson was born in 1860. He and his family are found in the Quincy census in 1860, 1880, and from 1910 on. In 1870 they are in Allen, Hillsdale County, the next town over; and in 1900, in Adams, Hillsdale, not far away. In 1880, Watson is still at home, farming with his father. He must have married very shortly after 1880, however, for the census of 1900 shows him married for 20 years already. He and his wife Mary E. or Molly, born 2/1861, have one daughter, Leola, born 9/1886. Leola was born in Tennessee; that fact proved helpful in tracing her. She married a man named Howard K. Anderson, born September 1885 in Pennsylvania. They had one daughter, Thelma F. Anderson, born in March, 1910.

WATSON FAY, 1901

Watson Lucius Fay, born November 14, 1901 in Onondaga, Onondaga, NY, and died January 3, 2004, in Camillus, Onondaga, NY, was the son of Alfred Nathan Fay (7/19/1869-6/16/1964) and Jennie Laura Abbe (6/8/1871-1/16/1968). Alfred Nathan was the son of James O. Fay, listed in Orlin, and Mary Hay.

Alfred's family remained in New York. Watson was married about 1922; in the census records of 1910 and 1920, he is with his father and mother; in 1930, he has a wife Marion L (8/13/1901-7/1986), and a daughter Shirley M. Shirley was most probably born in January of 1926. Watson is a machinist.

There is a chance that Marion's last name was Lewis, but there is insufficent evidence to do more than guess.
