His mother died at his birth so he was raised by his grandparents Wesley and Mary Jane Fay. He drove a horse and buggy to Woodbury Jr. high school (thru 10th grade - highest grade there). 29 June 1915 married Esther Scheel. His grandfather had died so he and Esther lived with his grandmother on Mt Hope Rd less than 2 years. April 1917 they and baby Chalmers [or Chalmer] moved to nw 1/4 of nw 1/4 of Sec 35 Bliss Twp. to help with the farming. In 1923 Vernon and family moved to Onaway to work in the steering wheel factory. Returning to Bliss area in 1929. They settled 1934 on the Charles Keiser 120 acre farm - sw 1/4 of Sec 16 in West Bliss. They raised 4 daughters and 3 sons losing 2 infants.

Besides farming Vernon worked on the soil conservation program for American Agricultural Association 15 years. The program paid farmers for not using their land. He was Bliss Twp. supervisor from Jan 1947 to 1970, during which time the new Emmet Co. court house was built, also the Emmet Co. Medical Care Facility at Harbor Springs. His name is on a brass plate in those lobbies. About this time they raised garden produce and raspberries to sell on the resorts and quit the heavy farming. He also sold cemetery markers and was sexton at Bliss Twp. Cemetery.

About 1964 Esther's health failed - with several stays in the hospital. A heart attack took her 15 Dec 1967. She is buried Bliss Cemetery.

New Year's morning 1968, their home burned very quickly. Little besides the Fay cane and some township records were saved. He sold the land to an Ohio man for a vacation spot with a life lease to live on a mobile home. He had a stroke, 3 July 1975. He later broke his hip and suffered other ailments. He entered County Medical Care facility in Harbor Springs, July 1976 -(Elenor notes:) where he suffered much.
