OHIO ALBUM QUILT

Ohio Star Album Quilt 2000

Ad

In June 2000 my husband, daughter, her children and I drove to Ohio to visit his widowed mother. We planned our visit around Starr's schedule for her children. While we were in Ohio, I solicited photos from other family members living there for a special quilt I planned to make for Christmas for my mother-in-law. While there I visited the School House Quilt Shop in Canton and bought some of Judie Rothermel's original fabrics from her Aunt Grace Collection. I also visited other fabric shops in the area and bought several suitable for the album quilt. No sooner had we returned to Maryland, than my sister-in-law called to ask if we could return for a surprise birthday party for her mother in August. That was the week we planned to return Starr's children to Georgia--spent the summer with other grandparents--and to get acquainted with her new home with the inground pool. Did I mention I have been an avid swimmer since 1948?

In the end, I changed my plans and looked for more fabric on our trip to the Massanutten Mountain Resort near Harrisonburg, Virginia in July, then returned to Maryland and found some more and managed to get that quilt completed in time for my son, Steve and his wife, Tra', to take it to Ohio for the party. Tra' had never been there so she had a lot of relatives to meet. Mother-in-Law was the only one she had met and that was during Christmases at our home.

This top photograph of the complete quilt (I did get the top and side borders on after photo was taken) shows Michaela holding the quilt in mid-August. The bottom blocks are four generations of the Hanlon Clan: My in-laws, Harold & Kate; me with hubby, Michaela between brothers, Joshua & Braden; and Aaron & Starr (their parents/now divorced.)

The fabrics represent: Household appliances used in early married life; Don & I enjoy visiting and photographing lighthouses; Older children enjoy Jr. Monopoly/little boy loves trains; American flags represent Starr's job with Dept. of Defense while M&M's represent the Millennium and date the quilt.
