Dresden Plate

Dresden Plate in a Garden Maze

This is the only quilt my mother ever made. It was started in the Fall of 1937 using her mother's stash of 1930's fabric. She completed the top by the time I was born, but then the quilt was tucked away and nearly forgotten for twenty years. I had left home after graduating from high school and Mom came across her quilt while cleaning the house one day. She then bought an oval wooden hoop and spent the winter of 1957 hand-quilting it. The family joke is that I grew up in the middle of that quilt!

My mother was Erma Grace Nichelson who passed away in 1967 at the age of 53. This photograph was taken in 1938 during the time she was piecing the quilt and expecting me.
