BAKER, JOHN

John Baker, Indian Fighter

John Baker was born in Prussia and came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ca. 1750. His wife died during childbirth while crossing the ocean and was buried at sea. It is believed he gave the child to a couple aboard the ship.

In 1760 he married Elizabeth Sullivan Adams in Philadelphia. She was the daughter of Doctor Sullivan who treated American soldiers during the Revolutionary War. John and Elizabeth settled in Greene County, Pennsylvania, ca. 1767. They lived among friendly Indian tribes until 1774 when rumors of Indian hostilities reached the area across the Ohio River. Before they could leave the Indians attacked and thus began Dunmore's War of 1774. Following this John Baker fought in the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) in the Virginia Militia Units. In 1781 Indians crossed the Ohio River near Holliday's Cove and started an uprising which resulted in the death of Capt. John Baker who is buried on the West Virginia side of the Ohio River at a place called Americana Park. There is an historical marker there describing the battle.
