SHIREY, NICHOLAS

The Scheurer/Shirey Family of Southwestern Pennsylvania

Nichlaus Scheurer is listed as one of the petitioners who established Fort Allen in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in 1774. He was of German heritage. Although his wife's maiden name has not been proven, it is possibly Truby, particularly since the Truby Brothers, Christopher and Michael, were sponsors of the Scheurer children at their baptisms. Nichlaus and Anna Maria had three sons: Christopher, Nicholas and John Michael. Their surname evolved into Shirey.

This younger Nicholas married a Ms. Kelley and together they had Nicholas K. born in 1806 and Hannah born in 1810. Their mother died following Hannah's birth, and the baby was given to an aunt, Nancy Kelley. Nicholas may also have gone to live with his aunt. It is not clear just where he was raised. The father relocated to Clarion County, Pennsylvania, where he remarried and fathered 15 more children. He died in 1852 and is buried in Clarion County. His son, Nicholas K. Shirey became a schoolteacher in South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County and raised his children there.

I was born in the Fay-West area of Pennsylvania (along border of Fayette and Westmoreland Counties) where I spent my childhood a few miles from the Shirey's residence at Barren Run. My line from Nichlaus Scheurer/Shirey follows:

1) Nichlaus Scheurer m. Anna Maria (unknown) 2) Nicholas Shirey m. Ms. Kelley 3) Nicolas K. Shirey m. Anna Margaret Sechrist 4) David Sechrist Shirey m. Catherine Davenport 5) Ella Mae Shirey m. (Wesley) Braden Nichelson 6) Erma Grace Nichelson m. Raymond Michael Suchocki 7) LaVonne Rae Suchocki (me) m. Donald Emerson Hanlon
