HALL FAMILY

The Hall Family of Southwestern Pennsylvania

A distant cousin has shared her research with me indicating that my Hall ancestors came from England. She has gotten back to John Hall who was the father of William Hall, a gentleman of Portsmouth, Sussex County, England. He was a Representative in Parliament during the Commonwealth. William was born in 1590 in England and died in Chichester, Sussex County. His wife was Mary. Their son, William, Jr. was born in 1620 in Chichester and died 06 April 1696 in Charles County, Maryland. He became a physician and came to Maryland about 1680 settling first in Somerset County and then moving to Charles County, Maryland. His son, John Hall, was born in 1655 in Chichester and died October 1716 in Charles County, Maryland. His wife was Alice whom he married in 1678 in Suffolk County, England. She died in 1724 in Charles County, Maryland. John Hall, Jr. was born 1680 in Somerset County, Maryland and died 1718 in Charles County, Maryland. His unknown wife preceded him in death and their three children, Charles b. 1706; Alice b. 1708 and Richard b. 1710, were raised by their grandmother, Alice Hall.

The earliest Hall ancestor I have identified is Richard Hall of Charles County, Maryland whose wife was Sarah. He was born there in 1710. His son, Moses was also born there about 1731 and died in Fayette County, Pennsylvania in 1801. Joseph Hall, son of Richard and unknown wife and grandson of Moses and Elizabeth Hall, was born in Wharton Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania circa 1784 and died in 1850. He married Mary Matthews in 1805 in Wharton Twp, Fayette Co, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Garrett and Margery Matthews. She was born in 1787 and died in 1865. Their son, John Hall, was born in 1806 and died in 1866. His daughter, Mary Ann Hall, was born October 11, 1835 and her husband, David Nichelson, was born December 18, 1834. They are buried at the cemetery in Normalville, Springfield Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

The photo is Mary Ann (Hall) Nichelson holding her great-great-grandson, Harry Wingrove, in 1921. She passed away the following year.

I was born in the Fay-West area of Pennsylvania (along border of Fayette and Westmoreland Counties) where I spent my childhood.
