Our grandchild, Fiona, was due just before Valentine Day in 2005 and I planned to make a quilt for her baby shower as I had done for her brother, Sebastian, the year before. Alas, she must have gotten some vibs about Halloween and that is the day she made her untimely entrance. So with 25 weeks gestation she weighed 1# 15 oz and was 13 inches long. She had a long hard struggle, but she survived! She came home from the hospital in time for the Easter Bunny and has continued to grow and develop into a beautiful little girl.
As a result of her long hospitalization, there was no baby shower and so I decided to make her special quilt for her first birthday. The first picture I received of her once she was off her respirator was my inspiration for this quilt. She was wearing a cute pink and white "Precious Moments" outfit.
Hubby and I were scheduled to take an Alaskan Quilting Cruise up the Inside Passage in mid-June of 2005 so I prepared the blocks and took them and my embroidery hoop and floss so I could work on them as we traveled from Baltimore to Seattle and then on those days when we had no stops in ports and again on our return trip to Baltimore. Once back home I assembled the blocks into a quilt top and machine quilted it on my Bernina 2000 in sections and then assembled the sections. It is made of two fabrics each with deep and medium pinks and a white design on top much like the white on white designs. I did use a WOW for the blocks which are hand-embroidered in a deep pink floss.
I sent it to her for her birthday, but it didn't get to the Post Office until after the family had flown to visit the other grandparents and so it spent a few weeks at the Post Office, but she finally got it.
The quilt is pictured above and Fiona is pictured below in a photo taken around her 1st birthday.
