Scottie 1956 Quilt

Scottie Class of 1956 Quilt

I graduated from Scottdale High School, Class of 1956 and immediately left for a job as a Secretary for the U.S. Government in Washington, DC. I do manage to get back there every five years for our high school class reunions. As plans were being made for our 40th year reunion, I decided it was time to commemorate our special class with a special quilt. Afterall, it was our class that began the class trips to D.C.(when I fell in love with the city) and we instigated the Valentine Dance complete with crowning the first Valentine Queen. There were other firsts for our class as well as a one and only event that we shall never forget, but won't discuss it here.

Our school colors were blue and white so I chose two shades of blue plus the white to give a little more contrast to the quilt. Except for the majorettes who are wearing their red plaid kilts, the three members of the Army National Guard and the Eagle Boy Scout who are wearing brown uniforms, everyone is wearing shades of blue and white. You can see the band members marching around the border of the quilt, each playing the instrument played in high school. The football and basketball players as well as the cheerleaders are dressed in their blue and white uniforms. The large center square features my cousin, Lucy, and I riding a carousel horse named, Trigger. We loved those cowboy movies and only missed a few. My favorite was Roy Rogers while she preferred Gene Autry, but I made the quilt so we are riding Trigger--not Champion!

The quilt (8'x9 1/2') was shown at our reunion in 1996 and each person was asked to come up and find themselves on it. As they did this a video was taken and they gave a brief interview. Those who wanted a video were asked to bring a blank and I took them home and spent two weeks editing, copying and mailing them. I must get mine out and look at it sometime!!! The quilt was shown again at the 50-year reunion, but no videos were taken.
