January 4, 1862 (from Nancy to her husband)
Hoping when this comes to hand it will find you well and doing well. I received your letter this evening which informs me of you afflictions.  I was in a dread to hear from you for I had heard you had give out on a march and was left and I think you had better come home until your health gets better- - -.  I am living by myself only as some of the children stays with me and that is a lonesome way of doing for me.  I would write more but I have not time at the present and God protect us through life and save us in death.  So nothing more at present only remains your affectionate wife until death.
