2. JAMES2 GREGORY (WALTER1) was born Abt. 1732, and died Abt. 1818. He married AGNES TRINDLE, daughter of WILLIAM TRINDLE. Notes for JAMES GREGORY:

The first state Tax was taken in 1768, and Vol. 20 of the PA Archives shows James Gregory in 1778 with 170 acres of Land. In 1779 his acreage was increased to 470 acres, evidently, the 300 acres from his father, Walter, was added. The acreage remained through 1785 (the last printed year) over 400 acres. James was the only Gregory shown in this period in Allen Twp., Cumberland, PA except John who appeared as a Freeman in the one year, 1779. After 1780 James is shown as owning 1 Negro.

The Cumberland County History of 1886 indicated that James Gregory was a Colonel in 1776, but no unit listed. It also shows that when the vote was taken in the county for the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia James was a Judge of Election in the Carlisle area. He is also shown as a Sub-Colonel when the first Militia was formed.

In Cumberland county Will Book B, p 161, the will of William Trindle of Allen Twp. Signed 24 May1771 and probated 20 Jan1774, shows his daughter Agnes Gregory, and her daughter Margaret. Walter Gregory was one of the witnesses. William Trindle was from the earliest settlers of Allen Twp., too, before 1747, according tot he history. Today the family is remembered by an area called Trindle Springs and the 641 route, the road from Carlisle to Mechanicsburg and beyond is called Trindle Road

3. ELIZABETH3 GREGORY (JAMES2, WALTER1) was born 17 Nov 1755 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and died in Kentucky. She married JAMES MCCORMICK, son of HUGH MCCORMICK and SARAH ALCORN. He was born Abt. 1751 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and died 1803 in , Nicolas, Kentucky.   Notes for ELIZABETH GREGORY:  When Elizabeth was about 8 years old, she and a younger sister were left at home alone, while the rest of the family went to town in the ox-driven wagon. An Indian appeared in the clearing and the children were terrified. Elizabeth barred the door and the windows, but the Indian was determined to enter the house. He climbed up onto the rock, intending to come down the chimney, but Elizabeth cut a corner of a featherbed and threw some feathers on the fire. He jumped down and ran away.

Samuel Tupper Smetters, a great-grandson of Elizabeth, told a sequel to this story at a reunion at the home of Mrs. David S. Grisham, saying that a Miss Gonzales, a missionary to the Indians, told him that the Indian went to this same cabin to try to beg for some bacon, but came away disgusted. He said "Bacon no good. Cabin smell to bad."

When Elizabeth was to be married, she sheared the wool from her sheep, she had seventeen of her own, washed the wool, carded it and spun it, and wove it into a piece of goods. She sent it to Philadelphia to have it printed with a rosebud spring design. We she received it back, she cut out and made her wedding dress.

4. ANN3 GREGORY (JAMES2, WALTER1) was born 08 Apr 1775, and died 18 Dec 1822 in Dills, Pennsylvania. She married ROBERT DILL, son of JAMES DILL and JEAN ARMSTRONG. He was born 27 Feb 1785 in Dills, Pennsylvania, and died 1837.  Notes for ROBERT DILL:  Capt Mathew Dill and Mary of Monaghan Settlement and Descendents Author: Rosalie Jones Dill Call Number: CS71.D5695

The following narrative of Robert Dill, Sr., is based on information furnished from records of Mrs. Alice Dill Beath of Washington Court House, Ohio, daughter of Robert Dill, Jr., and the late Judge Lewis Grant Dill of Waverly, Ohio, son of William Dill, younger brother of Robert, Jr. Robert Dill, Sr. (1767-1837), youngest son of James and Jean (Armstrong) Dill, of York county, Pa. had children as follows: Nancy, James, Robert, Richard, John, Jean, Margaret, Walter, William and Armstrong Dill.   Robert, with his older brother, Thomas, emigrated from York county to Paxton township, Ross county, Ohio, in 1800, some of the records citing "near Harrisburg, Pa." and others "near Carlisle, Pa." The early settlement and history of Horse Shoe Bend of Paint Creek, Ross county, is so identified with the life of Robert and Thomas, that a history of the life of Robert. Sr., and his family is a history of this section of Paxton township, Dill s Station is well known throughout Ross county. Robert took up all the land embraced in the Horse Shoe Bend of Paint Creek, having purchased a tract located under the warrant of Valentine Payton. After this purchase, Robert went on horseback to the state of Pennsylvania to obtain the money to make the first payment on his land of wilderness. On his return ride, with $1500 in gold in his saddle bags, by some mischance, his horse escaped and made off through the woods. After a hard chase the horse was captured and the money recovered. After erecting a cabin on the banks of Paint Creek, which was among the first built in this vicinity, Robert commenced the arduous task of clearing and improving this land, to enable him to raise a crop of corn and wheat, so much needed by the pioneers of Paint Creek valley at this time. Then he returned to Pennsylvania and married Ann Gregory, daughter of Colonel James Gregory and Agnes Trindle Gregory of Silver Spring, Cumberland county, Pa., bringing her back to Ohio with him.

James Gregory is shown in the 1790 census or Pennsylvania under "Gregary," which indicates he died after that date, Page 3, Vol. 6, 5th series, Penn. Archives, shows that James Gregory of Cumberland county, Pa., was commissioned a sub-lieutenant in the Continental army on 12 Mar. 1777. Pages 334, 500 and 588, Vol. 5, Penn. Archives, show letters written by James Gregory in connection with war matters while he was sub-lieutenant.

Robert Dill, Sr., had the fortitude of the early settlers to clear out the wilderness he had bought in Ross county and make it into a home for himself and his family. The clearing of this land, cutting the timber, rolling the trees together and burning them, burning the brush and getting the stumps out of the land, making it ready to cultivate, required many years of hard labor. The ax and the gun were the ever ready companions of the pioneers.

Robert Dill, Sr., was one of the first trustees of Paxton township. By an act to incorporate townships passed at the second session of the first General. Assembly of the state of Ohio on 2 April 1804, the inhabitants (or electors) having met at the house of Christian Platter for the purpose of electing township officers, the following were chosen: William Kent, clerk and treasurer; Robert Dill, Christian Platter, Jared Irvin, trustees; Zurl Combs, John Torbet, overseers of the poor; Thomas Edminston, Elisha Kelly, fence viewers; Samuel Jordan, Thomas Massie, listers of taxable property and house appraisers; Robert Edminston, Thomas Dill, John Swan, Spencer Records, Enoch B. Smith, supervisors of highway; Johua Davis, Benjamin McClure, John White, constables. The records of Paxton township. show that Robert Dill, Sr., was elected several times afterwards to various township offices.

Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON ALLEN:  FAMILY HISTORY OF GEORGE WASHINGTON ALLEN  Compiled by: Mable E. Allen, Newport, WA.

So far I haven't been able to trace George Washington Allen back to his parents. He was born 1836 in New York State. (This information is from court records and census. All have the same birth place.) Stories handed down are: His parents died and he was raised by two unknown maiden aunts. He ran away at the age of 15 and nothing else is heard of him until he married Matilda Eveline Hiatt.

After Matilda's death George married Nancy Abernathy. (Source: Madison County, Iowa , District Court clerk..) Marriage: George W. Allen to Nancy Abernathy, 07-31-1873--by D. Baxter, Justice of Peace and affidavit signed by Abijah Abernathy, as to full age. (Nancy's brother.)

Birth date 1848 NY came from 1900 Census Berwyn, Custer , Nebraska. Sup.#6 EN.Dist.60 Sht.3B Family Histories- a book in NE Library

Allen-Loy Family by Bernice Allen Loy

George William Allen married Nancy Jane Hopkins. To this union was born seven children: Alfred, Lewis, Walter, Oliver, Richard, Charlotte, and Fannie. The family of George and Nancy was raised and educated in the Berwyn vicinity. George was a farmer. George and Nancy lived on a tree claim in Custer County. After George's death Nancy and her mother Francis lived on the tree claim until 1909.

In the records of Walnut Twp, Madison County, Iowa, George W. Allen bought 120 acres for $100. He paid cash for it in 1872, later lost it to creditors who sued to recover their money. This is on record at Winterset Court House.

Martha Allen was born in Iowa, but soon after George and Nancy left Iowa , where he had been farming with Nancy's father James Hopkins, soon after she was born. They went to Lancaster County NE where Guye James Allen was born.

NOTES: Story as told to Mable Allen by Ethel (Hopkins) Spenser, the daughter of May Belle (Allen) Hopkins, goes like this: May Belle had a sister that died when she started menstruation. She had tried to wash herself in a creek in cold weather, that caused complications and she died. A few days later. So this could account for Sarah's disappearance, the age would be right.

When the Allen family left Lancaster Co., NE they went to Butler Co., NE. Alfred Eldridge Allen was born 08-25-1882. George Washington Allen had moved to Custer County and on 07-23-1882 he took out a homestead claim. Nancy must have stayed in Butler County because Alfred was born there a month later. In November of 1884, Lewis Christfer was born in Custer County.

The first homestead claim George W. Allen filled out, March 2, 1889 on section W1/2, NW1/4, section 32-12-6, which he did not perfect title to because of grasshoppers. The one he filed in 1890, according to Custer County records was W1/2, NW1/4,and N1/2, SW1/4, section 24-16N-19W-160 acres, which he owned until he died. It also said in the homestead papers that he and his family were away from the homestead for several months after their crops burned out. They went to Enid, Oklahoma to work in the harvest. Nancy's brothers had settled in that area. Her brothers were involved in the big race to claim land when the Oklahoma Territory opened up. Fannie Okly Allen was born in Enid, Oklahoma, she was George and Nancy's eleventh child.

George Washington Allen died 01-20-1907 at the age of 71 years in Berwyn, Custer County, NE. He is buried in Janesville Cemetery. Nancy out lived him 29 years, she is buried in Janesville Cemetery next to George W. Allen and their daughter Clara who died at the age of twelve, she had diphtheria. After George Allen's death, Nancy Jane (Hopkins) Allen moved to Berwyn, NE and rented the farm to her son. Alfred E. Allen, her son bought the home place in later years.

James and Mary Frances (Snodgrass) Hopkins are also buried in the Janesville Cemetery, they are Nancy's parents.
