1. H ENRY1 MATTESON was born 1646 in England, and died 1690. He married HANNAH PARSONS 1670 in Greenwich, Rhode Island, daughter of HUGH PARSONS and MRS. ENGLAND. She was born 1649. Notes for HENRY MATTESON:Henry Matteson, the individual from which the Matteson Historical Congress of America established its identity, was the first of that name to come to America. He arrived in 1666/1667 at the settlement called Portsmouth located at the north end of an island in Narragansett Bay that the Native Americans called Aquidneck. Portsmouth had been founded in 1638 by a small group headed by Mrs. Anne Hutchinson, an outcast from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They renamed the island the "Isle of Rhodes" or Rhode Island". It was from that small island that the state we know today as the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations took its name. Little is know of the background of Henry Matteson. He was believed to have been of Danish ancestry and that his ancestors first migrated to Scotland and then to England where Henry was born. After my youngest child Caroline arrives at the age fourteen years it is my will and desire that after my beloved wife Elizabeth should she be then living has her thirds laid off and divided equally divided amongst my seven youngest children to wt David, Peace, John, Joseph, Walter, Phebe and Caroline. Notes from another researcher: I am researching the family of Andrew SMOTHERS (SMATHERS, SMITHERS, etc.) whose will was written 4 Sep 1824 and proved May 1827 in Bath Co. KY. He named children: Thomas, Joseph, Ann (Jackson), Martha (Fowler), Margaret (Bristo), Sally (Hopkins), and Hugh. He gave one dollar to John, Elizabeth (Fuget) and Susannah (Gipson), relationship unspecified. I am a descendant of Hugh who was in Floyd Co. KY in 1820 and later moved to Franklin and Decatur Co., IN, as did his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah "Sally" and William Hopkins (son of William Hopkins and Peace Scott). According to a Decatur Co. History, Hugh's first wife (unnamed) was the mother of his daughter Martha who married James Davis in Floyd Co. KY in 1819. His second wife was a "Miss Hopkins." I also believe that the John Smothers named in the will was the same John Smothers who received a Revolutionary War pension in Morgan Co. KY (formed from Floyd). He was a resident of Rockingham Co. VA at the time of his enlistment. Andrew Smothers and his wife Sarah bought and sold land in Washington Co., VA in 1793 where his son Thomas m. Rebecca John in 1799. I have been in contact with descendants of Thomas who apparently took the spelling "Smithers." Andrew's wife at the time of his will was named Elizabeth. I am seeking information about all these individuals and have additional information to share. In the Original Plat Book of Clinton county, Indiana, Martha is shown as the owner of two plots of land. After Eldridge's death, Andrew Buntin, Martha's father was named as guardian of the estate and the children. In May term of Court 1839,(after the death of her father) Martha was named guardian. In February, 1835 Martha had petitioned the court for money to maintain the children. Found Genealogical Forum Library-Portland, Oregon Jan 2997In 1779, in Virginia all bank notes of the whole emissions of 20 May 1777 and 11 Apr 1778 were taken out of circulation since counterfeits had been issued by "our enemies of New York and found to be spreading, etc." In Washington county, Virginia 4 May 1778 (Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1768-1800, part 2 Lewis Preston Summer) FRANCIS HOPKINS was held on suspicion of his feloniously counterfeiting or erasing, altering sundry Treasury Notes...knowing same to be bad...He said he was in no was quality...but it is opinion of the Court that the said Francis Hopkins was guilty of passing Treasury Notes knowing the same to be bad.... On 19 May 1778 the Grand Jury returned to the Bar and presented as followeth 'viz Francis Hopkins for knowingly passing two bad ten dollar bills and buying bad money at an under rate. 19 May 1778-Ordered that Francis Hopkins be fined 50 pounds lawful money of Virginia and 6 months imprisonment for passing counterfeit money, 20 Aug 1778--- Ordered that Francis Hopkins be imprisoned within the walls of Forest at William Cock's old Place on Renfroes' Creek alias Spring Creek until the County Gaol is completed except on some extraordinary emergency and then only by the permission of a magistrate if there is one within 5 miles of said Fort. His securities were Zachariah Wolsey Frathia Wall, William Hopkins, and George Wolsey 22 Apr 1779---Estate of William Hopkins who had been taken and committed to Gaol o this county for Treasonable practices against this State....had broken Gaol and escaped...be sold and money deposited in Treasury...appearing he has no family and no stated place of abode. 22 Mar 1780---Escheator Indenture of Estate of William Hopkins 18 Sep 1782---Joseph Cole was security for the good behavior of Williams Hopkins. 20 May 1783---William Hopkins forfeited above bond for stealing a horse. Now this is all that actually occurred in the County records, but 100years later Draper started checking incidents of historical interest and according to his report, Francis Hopkins was hanged by William Campbell and a Negro, Thomas about 1779. Is was said he was a Tory and many other things...but from a very careful study, the conclusion is that the occurrence was occasioned by the fact that the Scotch-Irish were unhappy with the people who migrated down from Connecticut, New Jersey and New York...even in Draper's account, it appeared that Campbell chased Francis Hopkins and hanged him, only because he was told that he was a trouble-maker.....

He stated that his brother Henry Hopkins had substituted for him one time. He made application for a pension in Nicholas county, KY Jan 16, 1919 and his wife applied for a pension in the county of Nicholas Sept 26, 1840. She married THOMAS LEWIS 03 Mar 1784 in , Washington, Virginia, son of WILLIAM LEWIS. He was born 05 Mar 1755, and died 09 Aug 1849 in Morgan County, Kentucky. Notes for HANNAH HOPKINS: Hannah was listed a sister of Rev War Soldier, Gardner Hopkins on his pension application as being aged 73 and living in 1839 in Morgan County, KYFrom the papers of Mrs. Dayton Royse: The death record of Hannah Lewis, as reported in Morgan Co. vital statistics, reads as follows: Hannah Lewis, 89, female, farmer; residence, Morgan Co., ; place of birth, New York; parents, Francis and Mary Hopkins; place of death, Morgan Co.; time of death, Aug 26, 1852; cause, old age; remarks, "the wife of Thomas Lewis, one of the Revolutionary soldiers." Reference to this record appears in Kentucky Historical Society Communique, Vol. 1, No. 10, May 1943. Hannah is buried in the Green Lewis Cemetery in Morgan Co., KY.
