Robert Edward CAREY, was the grandfather of Joan PETTIT. One of four children of James and Mary CAREY nee HUNT Robert was born in Canterbury. His father James was a seaman on a steam packet.
Robert was Captain of The Queen HMTS , crewed by many Folkestone seamen,
during WWI. He was awarded an M.B.E and honoured by the Belgian government for his actions in the rescue of passengers of the Amiral Gentaume
Robert's siblings were William Frederick CAREY, Martha Maria CAREY and Alfred James CAREY. Alfred, born 1862, was also a seaman. A family story is that one of his voyages took Alfred to Australia where he liked what he saw and stayed.
