DAVIS & DAVIS
Staff Outing 12th June 1929

This is a large image and may take a little while to load

Adolphus Davis was in business as a house furnisher and drasper furniture in 1870 when his shop was located in High Street. In 1881 the shop is located in Sandgate Road and employed three men as cabinet makers. Adolphus, born in London c1845 is listed in the 1881 census as living at 30a Upper Sandgate Road with his wife Anna and children Alice (6), Charles (3), Adolphus H (2) and Olive (1). By 1954 Davis and Davis were trading from 4 Alexandra Gardens as Furniture Removalist and Storage specialists.

Below is a photograph taken of the staff of Davis and Davis on the occasion of their staff outing 1929. My grandmother, Florence (Phyl) Philpott nee Marsh is seated fourth from the right in the middle row. My Grandfather, Edward Philpott is the young man in the second row from the back wearing the light jacket and open collar. In the back row, the gentleman standing behind the lady wearing the neck scarf is my grandmother's uncle Percy Marsh.

NEWS FLASH! I have been contacted by Kitty Ifor - Jones. Kitty is the daughter of Charles Davis. She also has a copy of this photo and has identified for me her father and her Aunt Alice. Charles Davis is seated and wearing a hat, in the centre of the photo. His sister Alice is seated on his right. Alice worked as a secretary for the firm. It is very exciting to hear from Kitty, who was only a little girl at the time the photo was taken, that she can remember my 2x great uncle Percy Marsh. The world is indeed a small place.

Can you identify any other people in the photo? Please email me if you can help.

Below the photograph is a 1954 advertisment for Davis and Davis
