The Funeral of LEWIS H DILNOT

On a Tuesday in early November 1916 the funeral of Lewis H DILNOT took place in Folkestone. Lewis Dilnot was the cook aboard HMTS The Queen when she was sunk in the Channel by German destroyers on October 26th 1916. During the raid on The Queen Lewis was severely burnt and it was from these burns that he died - the only casualty of the sinking.

"The deceased young man was well known and liked in the town, and there were numerous indications of sorrow and sympathy at the Folkestone cemetery. The captain of The Queen and nearly all the officers and men attended, and three stokers and three seamen acted as bearers. There was a large attendance of the general public. The Rev. C. BROOK (Curate at St Saviours Church) took the service."
