Mr CLARK
1860

Folkestone December 13th 1860

Dear Sir

Mr CLARK of Sandgate a friend of mine is very much hurt at being, by ARMITAGE, the Sheriff's Officer at Dover, threatened with a levy of 2 for not attending the Michaelmas Sessions at Canterbury as a Juror.

A few years ago he was omitted from the Jury list on the grounds of being upwards of 60.

When he received the summons to attend from ARMITAGE he returned it mentioning that circumstance, then ARMITAGE replied saying he could not exempt him, but omitted to send back the summons and Mr CLARK, not knowing the day of the Sessions omitted to attend.

His exemption on account of age was made known to the Court by some of the Jury who attended but notwithstanding the fine was inflicted.

Is there no way by which the fine can be remitted without expense of much trouble - On reading the Act it seems to me that being above 60 he is not a person liable or qualified to serve on Juries; and is not therefore liable to obey a summons to serve or to make a long journey to prove his disqualification.

It is the business of the party making out the list to take care to insert qualified persons.

I have written to ARMITAGE to request him to delay levying until I have communicated with you.

I should be obliged if you could help me in the matter.

Truly Yours
Ralph Richd BROCKMAN
