His wife Martha Mary CAKE (1847-1907) was the daughter of John & Rhoda Sophia CAKE having been baptised at Charminster in Dorset on 6th June 1847. She died in 1907 and was buried at Fordington St George's church on 3rd December that year. They had the following children all baptised at Christchurch West Fordington unless stated otherwise. In April 1880 the existing Vicar the Rev Wm Cook Osborn left Christchurch and was replaced in July by Rev Charles Loyd Sanctuary. He must have been confused as he records the fathers name as John Richard Cardell on baptisms after that date starting with Ada, yet she and subsequent children are shown in census returns as Gilbert's children who was in 1881 living at 41 Grove Buildings in West Fordington with his widowed father-in-law John Cake. Perhaps this is where the name John comes from? By 1891 they had moved to live at 12 Sydney Terrace and were still there in 1913. Clog making was a much more traditional trade in Yorkshire and a typical workshop has been recontructed in Gocar Museum Huddersfield which for many years my mother-in-law helped run so I have sat and watched them being made. [Note:-Frank VOLLER (1864-1895) was the son of James VOLLER a carman by trade by his wife Emma and baptised at Rogate in Sussex on 3rd July 1864. He grew up initially on Bulls Farm at Liss in Hampshire before his family moved to Chantry Lane Cottage in Storrington in Sussex where he was working at the age of 16 as a farm labourer in 1881. He joined the Royal Navy and was serving on HMS Minotaur (picture left) at the time of his marriage to Annie. Annie according to the GRO was born in the 3rd quarter of 1869 and baptised at Maiden Newton in Dorset on 29th Aug 1869.She was therefore actually 16 not 19 when she married. As a young girl she lived for a time with her older married sister in Godmanstone.

In 1891 he was on board the newly commissioned "HMS Ringarooma" which was being fitted out for foreign service at Devenport. They sailed for Australia, Frank serving as a leading stoker, and arrived at Sydney on 5th Sep 1891. The picture left shows the crew of the Ringamoora whilst anchored at Bribane in Australia in 1894 but I have no idea whether he is featured. He must have returned to England as he died at the young age of 31 being buried at Alverstoke.

Annie returned to Dorset and in 1901 she was living with her parents Lot and Emma GREEN at 42 Dukes Avenue in All Saints Parish in Dorchester, correctly now recorded as a widow and working as a monthly nurse. She remarried in 1903 to Harry Foster GROVES a carpenter and was living with him at Moreton Station in 1911]
