The Great Fire of Dorchester

DORCHESTER SUFFERS BY FIRE:

Whereas it appeareth unto this Court as well upon the oaths as on the humble petition of the Inhabitants and others sufferers by Fire within the Borough of Dorchester in the county Dorset that on Thursday the twenty fifth day of March last about two of the clock in the afternoon a sudden and terrible fire happened in the said town of Dorchester which in a few hours burnt down & consumed the several dwelling houses & other buildings with the household goods corn grain wearing apparel and other goods of the several persons in the schedules hereunto annexed named

And Whereas it also appeareth unto this Court as well upon the oaths of several of the said petitioners as also on the oaths of Thomas EVOMY, Benjamin GAWLER, and Abraham GREY able experienced workmen who have carefully viewed the same that the damages sustained by the said several sufferers on a moderate computation amounts to the several sums of money set opposite to the respective names of the said several persons in the said schedules hereunto annexed amounting in the whole to ye sum of five thousand eight hundred forty three pounds nine shillings and eleven pence.

And it was this day prayed that this Court would Certify ye same to the Right Honourable Peter Lord King Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain pursuant to ye Act of Parliament in that case made which was ordered accordingly

The Right Honourable Peter Lord King Baron of Oakham Lord King

Wee whose names are hereunto subscribed his Majesties Justices of the Peace for the County of Dorset assembled at the General Quarter Sessions of the Peace held at Blandford in and for the said County the eleventh day of January in the twelfth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George King of Great Britain & do humbly certify ye Lordship that it was made appear to us this day in open Court upon the petition of [Long list of names - See below] Inhabitants or owning of houses within the Town and Borough of Dorchester in the said County there happened in the Brewhouse of Lawrence CHAPMAN aforesaid (one of the Petitioners) in the South Street of the Town & Borough of Dorchester aforesaid. A sudden and terrible fire which by reason of the then dry season and a tempestuous wind which blew from ye Southwest, in short spec of time burnt down and consumed the dwelling houses outbuildings barns stables or other buildings of fifty seven of the said petitioners together with their household goods corn grain wearing apparel and other goods as also the household goods corn grain wearing apparel & other goods of threescore and four other of the petitioners, The loss sustained by the said fire amounting in the whole to ye sum of five thousand eight hundred forty three pounds nine shillings and eleven pence [£5,843. 9s. 11d]

As we likewise made appear to us in this Court, as well upon the oaths of Thomas EVOMY carpenter joiner & surveyor; Benjamin GAWLER Mason & bricklayer; Abraham GRAY hellier and tiler; able and experienced workmen who have carefully viewed the damage sustained in ye said buildings and made a moderate estimate thereof, And also upon the oaths of the said poor sufferers with their families are impoverished and ruined unless timely relieved by the charitable contributions of well disposed Christians

We Therefore humbly recommend the said deplorable condition of the said sufferers v& their families to your Lordships charitable consideration To the end your Lordship would be pleased to grant unto them his Majesties most gracious Letters Patent under the Great Seal of Great Britain to empower them to ask and receive the charitable benevolence of his loving subjects in such places (except in the said County of Dorset) as to ye Lordship shall seem most moot towards the relief and subsistence of them and their families that they may not sink under the burden and pressure of this their very great calamity, We are your Lordships most humble servants
