Update June 2011: Due to my heavy involvement with the YDNA Project, I no longer am "actively" researching; I have every intention of picking up my research in the near future (once the YDNA project is fully up and running) and will continue to place records and information here when found..

The site is currently being updated, however, most of the new information has come from the emails of other researchers. The original intent of this web site is the same as it has always been; to provide a FREE tool for researchers to help each other by the sharing of information - please support this intent by helping to keep it as accurate as possible. Corrections are always welcome - rude emails are not...(those of you who have sent them know who you are....).

Some of the information listed here was found at Family Search and apparently submitted there in 1986. In 2001, I was contacted by a distant cousin who provided me with additional information on this family after she accessed my original website at geocities through an English Genealogy Site. Special thanks to Jill Cole, a distant cousin, for information included in the Richard Medhurst and William Honey Generation Reports. Jill is descended from John Abnett, one of the sons of Thomas Abnett and Elizabeth Strobridge.

Recently, a cousin from England, Barry Watts, began to research our family and he has provided me with additional information and clarification on some of the family history, again, with the help of my Uncle Frank H. Jessup....

Even more recently, I have begun to receive emails from further descendants of this family and have updated the information and provided their names where appropriate. Please remember that this emailed information will NOT have been verified by Wills and Deeds unless noted and researchers will need to verify the accuracy of such information on their own. James Abnett born May 17, 1811 Maidstone Kent, Englanddied August 27, 1896 Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia married in 1848 in Australia to Bridget Finnegan born born about 1848 in unknown died in 1864 in Mudgee, New South Wales, Australia married second on 16 February 1867. in Australia to Mary Ann Birchell born 20 May 1850 Seaham, New South Wales, Australia died 25 October 1898 in Orange, New South Wales, Australia

"James Abnett was convicted of stealing three live tame rabbits, value 12s. The property of William Abnett, his brother, at Maidstone." Sentence: transported for seven years (Australia)" James arrived in Australia 27 August 1832 on the Convict Ship "Clyde1" and was described in the Convicts indents as being 22 years old, Protestant, Single and a Bricklayer by trade. He was 5'4" tall, ruddy and freckled complexion, dark brown hair and hazel eyes. James married twice, firstly to Bridget Finnegan. They had no children. Secondly, at the age of 57, he married Mary Ann Birchell who was 16 years old. They had 11 children of whom 8 were living when James died in 1896 at the age of 85 in Australia.
