Stephen Henry Boykin
son of Burwell Boykin

Update June 2011: Due to my heavy involvement with the YDNA Project, I no longer am "actively" researching; I have every intention of picking up my research in the near future (once the YDNA project is fully up and running) and will continue to place records and information here when found..

The site is currently being updated, however, most of the new information has come from the emails of other researchers. That information will in most cases NOT have been verified by my personally viewing the records used. If you take this information for your own files, please remember that it has not been verified and proven unless otherwise specified. Since I am not actively researching at the moment, there may have been newly discovered information on any of the surnames included on this site...i.e. new information may now be available on FreeBMD for birth and death information that contradicts what is found on this web site. When you see this, please drop me an email and I'll update the information.

The original intent of this web site is the same as it has always been; to provide a FREE tool for researchers to help each other by the sharing of information - please support this intent by helping to keep it as accurate as possible. Corrections are always welcome - rude emails are not...(those of you who have sent them know who you are....).

Happy Researching and "Hold Fast"!

Generation Five Stephen Henry Boykin

Stephen Henry Boykin was born about 1782/3 to Burwell Boykin and an unknown single woman about Oct 1773 - Burwell Boykin claimed the infant after the maternal grandfather threatened to dispose of it "to the hogs" and raised and educated him as a Surveyor. Information From: [email protected] Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005

Burwell supported Stephen's first marriage to Rebecca Amanda Addirton, whose family was from Maryland and was the social "equal" of the Burwell Boykin family (who by that time were large Plantation owners and influential citizens in the South). The two children of this marriage were left legacies at the time of Burwell's death on Aug 17, 1817 but the children of Stephen's second marriage were ignored. Information From: [email protected] Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005

There appears to be a question as to whether Rebecca Addirton Boykin died or was divorced from Stephen.

He married first to Rebecca Addirton of Maryland. One source (Florence Boykin) said this marriage ended in divorce at the insistence of Rebecca's mother. Source Information: Rootsweb.com Worldconnect; electronic; Author: Brady Kerr; email [email protected]; accessed by Lori McLeod Wilke August 10 2005

However -

"After her death in 1805 (?), he married Dorcas." Information From: [email protected] Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005

The Charleston Times of 10-7-1805; reported that the death of Mrs. Rebecca Boykin "the amiable consort of Mr. Stephen Boykin" as occurring near Camden on 10-02-1805 at age 30. Source Information: Rootsweb.com Worldconnect; electronic; Author: Brady Kerr; email [email protected]; accessed by Lori McLeod Wilke August 10 2005

Children of Stephen Henry Boykin and Rebecca Amanda Addirton

1. Rebecca Amanda Boykin

2. Addirton Boykin - apparently an attorney by 1823

Dorcas Rogers Boykin was the second wife of Stephen; apparently the Rodgers were considered a different "class" then the plantation owning Boykin's and this second marriage was not acknowledged by Burwell Boykin. One researcher speculates that class was not the only distinction; the Rodgers were Baptist. Dorcus' nephew was the Rev. James E. Rodgers, Pastor of Antioch Baptist. Information From: [email protected] Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005

Dorcas was born cr. 1802 and died on Nov 15, 1872. Legend has it that her father-in- law never acknowledged the marriage nor the children born from it.

Children of Stephen Henry Boykin and Dorcas Rodgers (Rogers)

1. Stephen Madison (Col.) Boykin b. December 10, 1817 d. September 25, 1897 buried in Boykin Cemetery, located on McLeod Property, McCaskill Road, South Carolina married three times - first to Annie McLeod, second to Eliza Arrants McLeod, third to Mary Arrants

3. Mahaza Boykin b. unknown d. unknown (source of parentage: Will of Dorcus Boykin) buried unknown married to James Banks Bradley b. unknown in South Carolina. (1850 Sumter Census)

Note: Mahaza was apparently James' second wife; note the birth place of four eldest children in the census record below. It would seem that the youngest three may be Mahaza's and the eldest four another wife. - However, James was also born in South Carolina, perhaps the family traveled to Alabama for a time and there was no first marriage for James.

Hi saw your web page and thanks for having it. I thought that I would provide some information on Zeno Love Boykin who would marry Franics Grier Britton. I notice you don't have much for her. She was the daugher of Stephen Boykin and Dorcas Rogers. I just received the widow's pension records for Zeno Britton. She was born in 1823. She was married on January 14, 1840 to Francis Grier Britton. He died on the Mexican War on April 21, 1847. He had the following children, Eliza Britton born December 25, 1840, Mahaza Britton born November 12, 1842, Stephen Charles born April 15, 1844 and Elizabeth born July 31, 1847. Dorcas Rogers was a witnesss to her claim for a widow's pension as guardian for her four children. In the petition she said that after Francis Grier Britton died she married Benjamin D. Bradley on January 14, 1859. Please add this information to your web site if you feel it appropriate.
Thanks

HISTORICAL NOTES:

Toward the end of December, 1860, acting under authority of an Act of the General Assembly of South Carolina, passed December 17, 1860, Governor Pickens called for ten regiments of volunteers from the militia of the State to serve for one year.

One of the regiments organized under that call was designated the 2nd (Palmetto) Regiment. It was mustered into State service, April 9, 1861. When the men of the regiment were offered the opportunity of volunteering for Confederate service four companies - those commanded by Captains W. H. Casson and William Wallace, of Columbia, John D. Kennedy, of Camden, and John S. Richardson, Jr., of Sumter - volunteered. These four companies, with the field and staff of the regiment, were transferred to Virginia, April 24, 1861. Six other companies soon joined them and the regiment was mustered into the Provisional Army of the Confederate States, by Captain John Scott, C. S. A., Mustering Officer, May 22 and 23, 1861. Much of the subsequent history of the regiment is given in the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies and in the History of Kershaw's Brigade by D. Augustus Dickert (Newberry, 1899).

2nd Infantry Regiment [also called 2nd Palmetto Regiment] completed its organization near Richmond, Virginia, in May, 1861. The men were from Columbia, Camden, and Charleston, and the counties of Sumter, Richland, Greenville, Kershaw, and Lancaster. After fighting in Bonham's Brigade at First Manassas , the unit served under Generals Toombs, Kershaw, Kennedy, and Conner. It participated in many conflicts of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor except when it was detached with Longstreet at Chickamauga and Knoxville. The 2nd was active in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and ended the war in North Carolina. It reported 5 killed and 43 wounded at First Manassas , and lost eighteen percent of the 338 at Savage's Station , twenty percent of the 203 at Malvern Hill , thirty-seven percent of the 253 at Sharpsburg , and forty-one percent of the 412 at Gettysburg . The regiment sustained 10 casualties at Bentonville and totalled 184 men on March 23, 1865. It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. http://www.researchonline.net/sccw/unit102.htm Accessed by Lori McLeod Wilke on March 23 2004

Obituary of Stephen Henry Boykin

"We regret to announce the death of this gentleman, which occurred on Thursday night the 29th of March, 1855. Mr. Boykin was 81 years of age, and highly respected, and for many years occupied an honorable and useful position, as one of the oldest and best surveyors in the State, We have no doubt, but that there has often in the judicious discharge of his duties, reconciled many adverse parties and consequently prevented a great deal of unnecessary hard feelings and litigation."
