ABOUT THIS BRANCH - Harris/Dunvegan including the Talisker Branch (30097) and the Alexander of Liosale Branch (30096/25196/37219)

This page has been created as a companion to the FTDNA R-L165/S68 Project. The SNP R-L165/S68 was discovered to be a defining SNP of the related group of participants in the ACMS Project at FTDNA; the first MacLeod/McLeod was found positive in March of 2010 and all those whose YDNA showed a genetic relationship within the past 600 years to this individual have also been found positive when tested. Although none of the individuals on this page have yet ordered the L165/S68 test, it is predicted that they will also carry the SNP which is estimated to be between 2750 and 3500 years in age. (R-L165 aka S68 is downstream of Z196 which is another newly discovered SNP)

Dr. Jim Wilson discovered L165/S68 during an independent University of London study and found many of the men of the Isles of Skye and Lewis to be carriers; to date a Cluster of MacDonalds, Buies of Jura and MacNeils of Barra have also been found to be L165/S68 positive. Enough evidence exists that Dr. Wilson has stated that this is an exclusive SNP representing a Norse Viking Ancestry which corresponds with the Oral and Written Traditions of the Clan MacLeod.

The table below shows the Deduced Ancestral Modal of this group using the individual haplotypes and compares it (the haplotype) to the Deduced Ancestral Haplotype of the larger group of genetically related MacLeod/McLeods in the R1b Haplogroup of the project. (Note: DYS 389 toggles along with growth in membership in the larger group - the two haplotypes (DYS 389=13/29 and DYS 389 = 14/30 have a TMRCA estimate of 300 years {30 year generations/95% probability.)

To determine when the mutations in the paternal lines took place, it is necessary to test cousins who share a more recent common ancestor with each of these men. It would also be of great benefit to the entire project if these men would upgrade their testing levels to the 67 and 111 levels as well as for the SNP R-L165.

37392 - Murdoch Murchadh MACLEOD I of Lewis - YDNA has proven that the MacLeods of Raasay and the MacLeods of Talisker and later, of Liosale, share a Common Ancestor. As of December 2011, there are no distinguishing markers that could help to determine who is of Raasay(Lewis) and who is of Harris.
