Walking with Ghosts..........

a website for the descendants of Angus and Nancy McCutchen MacLeod~~

Sandhills North Carolina Branches

This page has been created as a Companion Page to the FTDNA L165/S68 Project; the information has been extracted from various internet sources , "Sandhills Streams and MacLeod Genes Five Emigrant Familys, Alexander C. McLeod, Clan MacLeod Magazine April 2008 pages 495 - 506", and/or the FTDNA L165/S68 Project.

"The Sandhills lie to the west of the Cape Fear and north of the Yadkin-Pee Dee....There are four main tributaries of the Cape Fear....Deep River, Upper Little River, then Little River and Rockfish Creek. Below these is the Drowning Creek/Lumber River tributary of the Pee Dee System...." "Sandhills Streams and MacLeod Genes Five Emigrant Familys, Alexander C. McLeod, Clan MacLeod Magazine April 2008 pages 495 - 506",

The families shown here were included in the Clan Magazine Article based upon their participation in the ACMS DNA Project and the fact that they had some form of a published genealogy. They are included on this page because they share a pattern of mutation and a TMRCA to each other/and or the Clan MacLeod Haplotype that indicates that they shared a recent MacLeod Ancestor.

Juniper Creek/Buffalo Creek/ Rock Fish Creek / Middle Swamp Family
(so titled in "Sandhills Streams and MacLeod Genes Five Emigrant Familys, Alexander C. McLeod, Clan MacLeod Magazine April 2008 pages 495 - 506")

Three siblings left Scotland aboard the "Duke of Kent" in 1802; John, Donald and their sister Margaret McNeil who was widowed. John appears to have also been widowed by the date they left Scotland and traveled with a son. John and Margaret settled together on Juniper Creek. Donald with his wife, a McRae and their two children settled along Rockfish Creek but would eventually move to Middle Swamp.

Tuckahoe Creek / Horses' Creek Family
(so titled in
"Sandhills Streams and MacLeod Genes Five Emigrant Familys, Alexander C. McLeod, Clan MacLeod Magazine April 2008 pages 495 - 506")

The Widowed Niell McLeod arrived in North Carolina earlier than the above family; he appears to have immigrated cr. 1777. His records are found in Cumberland County. Immigrating with him were four sons - Daniel (and his wife, Martha McKinnon), and Norman(no issue) who were the children of his first marriage and Alexander (died unmarried in the Revolutionary War) and John (had issue with Christina Clark) by his second. A daughter reportedly remained behind in Scotland having already married.

Niell and three of his children moved on into Moore County to live on Horses' Creek (Pee Dee River Tributary) while Daniel and his family remained in Cumberland.

Since 2008, three other particpants have been found to share the mutation at marker 3 (DYS 19), markers 10 & 12 (DYS 389) and two of these new participants also share the mutation at marker 32 (DYS 576). It now appears possible that these families all share a more recent common ancestor to each other than to the rest of the ACMS R1b / L165 project members. The table below shows these new participants in comparison to the Sandhill Families.
